207872 2004-01-16 04:13:00 The tittle pretty much says it all, I have decided to purchase a scanner but have no idea. Over the past few years ive completely ignored scanners to the point i dont know why the $400 scanner is better than a $100 scanner. I was looking to spend no more than $300, i would be using it for scaning hand drawn artwork and the odd photo. Does anyone have any experience with sub-$300 scanner? What are some good brands? Has anyone had a good experience with a particular model? Pete O'Neil (250)
207873 2004-01-16 04:21:00 Sure I'd be happy to help you buy one. Send me the cash and I'll get it for ya. :D

Seriously - sub $300 would definitly do it for what you want. I've got an old Genius ($150) that works perfectly for me for images for the displaying electronically.

207874 2004-01-16 06:54:00 Canon D646U is what I use - bought on Fly Buys but only about $150.00. Maybe cheaper. Have a look on Pricespy.co.nz

207875 2004-01-16 06:55:00 Warehouse stationary actually had a good scanner for $49.95 on super special just beofre Xmas it was a 48 bit scanner with straight to photocopy(printer) function and OCR (text recognition). Although I didn't actually get one as I already have one it looked pretty good to me. They aren't on super special anymore but are now selling at $99.95 usually $149.95.

If someone has actually bought one of these then perhaps they can comment on how they perform, but it seemed like a good deal to me.

207876 2004-01-16 18:40:00 just a word of warning - if you're looking at buying a Multfunction device (Printer/Scanner/Copier all in one unit) stay away from the HP PSC 1210. The printing function is excellent (I have one), but the scanner is not very good quality. Photos come up grainy with lines through them etc. somebody (208)
207877 2004-01-16 18:50:00 that might be something to do with the 'de-screen' function, somebody (it is on mine).
I have a HP 2200c usb which I can't recomend, as it takes 30 seconds every time I scan to 'warm the lamp' ..talk about the dark ages! other than that it scans OK

207878 2004-01-16 18:57:00 Oh yes, other things to look for are straightening software (for pics just thrown in) and good ocr,
Canons say they come with good software and don't have to wait all day for lights to warm up, any truth in that Peter...?

The HP ocr isn't too bad (just a bit of goofing around with puntuation and spaces)
