207764 2004-01-15 22:18:00 Hi all

I have a PC company computer running XP home edition.
My problem is when I leave my phone line connected to the computer people who try to ring me cannot get through. They & I only hear one ring & then nothing. At first I thought it was XP's fax software causing the problem but that doesn't seem to be the case as I don't have it installed. When I pull out the modem connection everythings fine. I can't see anything obvious in the modem setup that could be causing this. Oh! my modem is a CSX softk56 Data fax Voice Speakerphone CARP

Thanks: Tom

207765 2004-01-15 22:31:00 I had the same problem, same company, XP home.
Although I was told there was nothing wrong with the installed modem, removing it and installing a replacement fixed the problem. The only way they could to get rid of me :-)
It was fixed before they went out of business so not sure where you stand.

207767 2004-01-16 03:37:00 dows it do it with the pc turned off??

most likly you simply have to many phones connected or poor connections/bad lines which need repairing. all the phones should have a RAL number. add all the phones RAL numbers to gether and it needs to be less than 6 (i think). cordless and some fax machines can be a real hog. unfortunatly its realy hard to tell what RAL number to give for modems as a lot of supermarket pc's don't have telepermit stickers on their modems.

try unpluging most of the phones and also check the pc isn't set to answer or boot (bios optoin) on ring.

207768 2004-01-16 08:08:00 Hi Tom,
PC co replaced my modem ~ I still have my old computer available with 98 OS & 5 yr old modem and it worked fine plugged into the same phone line. Is there anyone locally that could plug in another computer to see if it is a phone line problem or the darn PC co modem.

207769 2004-01-18 20:28:00 Hi all

Sorry I have taken so long to reply, I've been away for the weekend. I have an HP computer in the house as well & this does not have the same problem as mine. I only have 1 house phone so I'm not overloading the system? I did swap modems with my sons one & I still got the same problem. I'm pretty sure the problem is on my computer somewhere, it's just a case of trcking it down. I'll get some one to ring me when the computers turned off (line still plugged in) & see if it is still doing it. Oh! this also happened at the previous house I was in. I have only just moved.

207770 2004-01-18 21:30:00 Is it set to "wake" the computer... a bios setting...? 00falcon (3801)
207771 2004-01-19 01:45:00 Check the initialisation string for the option called "auto-answer". If you haven't got a manual which tells you, search on Google for "Hayes modem codes". If you turn that to off, it should fix the problem. At the moment it seems to be set to "autownaser after one ring". :D Graham L (2)
