You get charged for these even though you don't actually get them. As you leave you PC on the time and it is a full speed connection then someone may be flooding your assigned IP address with data. This would use up heaps of bandwidth and be the cause of your extra data and nothing has actually been transferred to your computer.

Just food for thought.

When we were on Jetstream Home what our problem was wasn't that we were downloading (not that we could do much on 500MB), but idiots with no-ip.com accounts and a bit of free bandwidth trying to access a webserver which didn't exist because they hadn't updated their own accounts..
Or worse, people using P2P networks then somehow leaving a session valid so it kept sending data to us (which was being rejected by the router).
At the end of the day we were just under $50 short in excess bandwidth mainly because I ended up shutting down the router and leaving it off for several days

207933 2004-01-18 09:28:00 Ouch! This makes me glad that my Dad forked out for a $1000 firewall, that we didn't think was nescesary!

My Dad is a bit angry, because I go over by about 100mb on full jetstream, going over half a mb a second.

Oooh. Scary.

...Goes to look at all those security patches that have been skipped for the last year :-)

Damn that's a hell of a lot for a Firewall when you could pick up a 486 for around $50, and invest an hour into learning the basics of Smoothwall :D

The Data will still be being sent to/from the router/modem/firewall, and that's what Telecom count!

207935 2004-01-18 20:01:00 My Dad has his business running behind it, so he wanted something simple, and easy. We thought it was heaps as well, so maybe someone sucked us in somewhere, but oh well, it works mejobloggs (264)
207936 2004-01-19 17:34:00 Try this (home.comcast.net) free program if you suspect a Wireless Intrusion.

You wouldn't happen to have a Hewlett-Packard PC with a multimedia keyboard?
I had one that was pinging away at 20mb per hour on a 128k cable connection.
