2004-01-16 09:54:00 | The main comp would have been on, the power button is broken and it's a ***** to start up. :( I could always disconnect the router for a few days. But that won't stop the 'hacker' from trying again if it is a hack. I'm not sure whether I should get the internet password changed and probably dad will have to pay up in that case, or leave the account running and have a chance to 'prove' that the hacker exists. If he/she/it exists. I've run a search for files created in that window, which found nothing on my laptop with the 40GB drive, and only 200MB or so of files on the desktop, most of which was stuff in Internet Cache. Would I be right in thinking that either someone managed to crack the WEP key on the wireless network, crack our Jetstream password, or someone downloaded a hell of a lot of porn? Or the 'Telecom are out to get you' conspiracy theory...

2004-01-16 12:02:00 | Have you tried putting the bunged pc into sleep mode or standby even? Y'know turn on S3 something in the power options in bios then hit the sleep key and psssssh... the room goes quiet. I would think that the fact you don't have room to store 20.7GB is enough proof to telecom that it wasn't you. But $4000 for 20GB... jeez wata rip.

2004-01-16 19:56:00 | Looks to me to be a Wireless hole I'm also running a wireless network and prior to putting it in I did lots of research on the web . If the router is acting as a DHCP server, You may be able to confirm this by seeing how many addresses have been assigned (if more than 2, this is your hole) To secure make sure the network is NOT broadcasting the SSID, if using WEP or WPA change the shared key . If the router is acting as a DHCP server, I suggest switching off DHCP and using a static IP address . Also changing the internal network address may help stop the problem short term . But I'll tell you this much . even if your running 128 bit WEP there are tools on the web (mostly Linux) that can capture the data, analyze it and work out the WEP shared key within 24hrs and remember anyone upto 150Mtrs away from your base station can do this . As a rule I would only use a wireless network router that supports WPA and I would make sure that the shared key is at least 20 Characters as this is the most secure config . I'm sorry to say that Telecom is likely to call any incorrectly setup network your problem, and make you pay the bill .

2004-01-16 20:37:00 | Another security option with the wireless network is to put in the MAC address of the wireless network card(s) you are using into the access point. Then set it to only allow access to those MAC addresses. | CYaBro (73) | |
2004-01-16 21:57:00 | Sorry I should be more specific. By "help secure the wireless network" I mean that the neighbour just phoned us to remind us to secure it with WEP when we first installed it a few years ago, as when we first installed it, I hadn't secured it properly. Nobody has our key, it was generated at random. Ours and our neighbours wireless network is the only network that the computers are able to detect. I'm sure it's not him. Perhaps he could help somehow, though. I suppose someone with a laptop could have driven down the road and used some utility to break our WEP key and downloaded to their hearts content. It's annoying I don't think our router keeps any useful statistics of traffic used. Not that I can find. If anything this is an excuse to nag dad to replace our discontinued Nokia router...

2004-01-16 22:47:00 | what a rip 20 gigs is worth about $120 with paradise saturn cable , cancel your telecom account and refuse to pay unless you get some proof that you did download the data . Try fairgo as well that is one of the main reasons people stay with a 56k modem . I use slingshot with unlimited usage at $17 per month .

2004-01-16 23:11:00 | Download and install Zone Alarms firewall(it`s free) then go to this site and get Visual Zone(free also)......www visualize software .com...... They won`t solve your recent problems, but they will prevent future ones. Visual zone keeps a log of all incoming and outgoing activity,so it`s quite aesy to see who`s trying to milk you.

2004-01-16 23:18:00 | What speed is your Jetstream connection It's unlikely to be anyone in a car as if your running 128kb speed connection (and assuming you used 5GB of traffic) then 15GB of stolen traffic would take about 150 Hours to download (eg 6 . 25 days of downloading non stop) Sorry to say, I would be looking around the neighbors Something also worth mentioning is that if someone has been using your network it is safe to assume that any data you've used to the web has been compromised . If you use internet banking, I would change your passwords (after you re secure your network, that is) Going back to what I said this morning, does your router run as a DHCP server if it does, Its likely you will be able to confirm if this is the source of the problem (if more than 2 addresses have been issued) these dhcp servers also normally log the Mac Address for the adapter . So you may be able to work out the hackers Mac Address . Hope this helps, If you can prove your Network has been hacked and are able to provide the Hackers Mac address, the Police may be able to help (might be the only way to get some of the money back) Having said that I'm not sure what the Police would do (if anything)
