207952 2004-01-16 17:53:00 This query is prompted by the postings about Jet stream bill.
If someone knew my log on name and password could they dial in to my ISP and use them to access internet and e-mail etc?
Would my ISP have a record of the phone number of the caller.
I doubt if this would be kept even if it was noticed.

207953 2004-01-16 18:25:00 As far as I know, they would keep a record. Even so, there would be no way for you to prove that you hadn't gone to somebody else's house and dialed up using your account from there. somebody (208)
207954 2004-01-17 01:47:00 If it's just an ordinary account (for a modem connection) ... no problems about the access. All you need is a name/password.
There are records kept of all "phone" connections, by Telecom. ( Geo W Bush wants to know when you called Osama b L. :D ) So you could probably argue that/prove that you don't know the other place (but if you're flat-rate, it wouldn't be a matter of an excessive bill, but the privacy problem, and the activity of an intruder might matter).

I don't think someone could access a highspeed account from another line. It's a "permanent" connection and it would be normal to limit it to a known line. But I could be wrong. B-)

So keep your password secret. And change it often. :D

207955 2004-01-17 02:33:00 apart from the fact that jetsream works on "static IP" so if anyone else is using your account, telecom ( and you ) should wonder why for example somone is using your account when they live in nelson and you live in wellington?

but then if someone has your account details, then it's possible that telcom might find you liable for money owed.

207956 2004-01-18 08:47:00 Before I went to Paradise Broadband, I was on an Xtra $27 unlimited access plan . A few bills had additional charges of between $5-$10 on them .

I rang Telecom and they informed me that these charges were applied as I had 2 dial up connections running at the same time (to which I replied Bull sh#T) They made me pay $200 to trace all my calls .

In the end, I was provided with 2 phone numbers, one was mine and the other was someone I worked with .

Well I informed my boss and the individual was fired for a breach of the companies security policy . (turned out that he used a hacking tool on my laptop one day when I forgot to lock it, to turn the *****'s that made up my password into my actual password . Bastard!!

Still a bit peeved that Telecom made me pay $200 to find out who had gained access to my account .

207957 2004-01-18 10:27:00 My 10 cents worth, I thought that jetstream gives you a new IP address everytime you log on, I wanted to use PC anywhere to log into home, but telecom wanted to charge me an extra $20.00 per month to get a static IP address.

207959 2004-01-18 11:55:00 Jetstream accounts with some ISP's use a fixed IP and others use a dynamic IP address.

Provided the phone line is enabled for jetstream it is possible to connect from another location using the same account and login.

Assuming you are talking about dialup - Absolutely. It's quite handy if one has two phone lines and wants to switch to the other to dial up.

Some ISPs will only allow you to use one phone number that you need to register with them when using dialup so I guess they can easily see where you are dialling up from. Whether they keep a record of it is another matter. Ask your ISP and find out. ;-)

I am using another friend's 2nd account for Jetstart. The provider is Quicksilver, and they advised that all I needed was for the line to be ADSL enabled. I can log in from any other Jetstart enabled line with his details.
