208281 2004-01-18 07:55:00 Telecom runs on the CDMA network which is popular around European countries (Europe, Germany, etc). At the moment they have the more efficient network enabling them to do $10 all you can text and are currently talking to TelstraClear about doing a joint upgrade on their networks throughout NZ which would cost ~$6.5 million (IIRC) but provide them with a much better service and allow for future expansion with services such as PXT, WAP and anything which hasn't reached us yet. Should this proposal go ahead I'm sure that Telecom are switching over to GSM (was talking to the local Telecom employee at dinner the other night).

Currently Vodafone holds the cellular user base at 51% with Telecom using the last 49% (dunno how TelstraClear fits in..?), but Telecom have said should their share go to 30% or below they'll be dropping their mobile network in New Zealand.
Voyaging to other countries currently requires a call to Telecom to setup roaming before you go.

Vodafone runs on the GSM network which is popular in asian countries such as China, Japan, etc and they have a large GSM userbase in that region. As of yet Vodafones network isn't efficient enough for them to allow $10 unlimited texting, however they have introduced PXT messaging. For roaming you don't need to contact Vodafone before leaving NZ if you are on a prepay plan as that has already been setup worldwide for you, however contract customers have to notify vodafone beforehand and then they are setup for life.

Well that's what I heard anyway, and at the end of the day it's your choice but before I go - both parties acknowledge there is a delay sending SMS messages between providers because Vodafone blocked Telecoms business messaging service (enabling employers to message their employees) for fears of SMS spam.

208282 2004-01-18 07:57:00 One thing that may influence your choice:-
Telecom Mobile is a seperate division from Telecom Broadband/Internet (and they're different from Telecom home services and so forth), therefore if you think you'll skip telecom because of their ADSL plans or anything then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face

Don't know about westpac but ASB Bank has the ability to topup Vodafone and Telecom prepary mobiles - just be aware you pay $5 for the privilage though.
I would guess the same applies for westpac

208287 2004-01-18 08:54:00 in the pricing booklet it says "If you are an ANZ, westpac or ASB, you can get a telecom prepaid voucher from most of your banks ATMs nationwide" Megaman (344)
208288 2004-01-18 09:06:00 It's never costed me $5 to top up Vodafone (When I was with them, or other Vodafone users Cell's) or Telecom (My current provider of choice).

I was spending roughly $120 - 160 a month with Vodafone on Txt messaging alone, this doesnt include the one one-minute a month call I'd make (Sometimes I wouldnt even make a single call), so switching to telecom seemed the obvious choice!

I've recently spoken to a Telecom rep who says that Telecom will be keeping this $10 txting til the end of December 2004 AT LEAST... Meaning they think that at its current adoption rate, they plan on keeping it as a permanent thing.

The 027 network does appear have greater clarity, and better reception way out in the wops IMO!

You also dont get that annoying 'jittering' of speakers whenever a txt message or call is coming through!

There's the Hyundai phone (I think... might be Kyocera) for 027 which does Pxt messaging.

Hope this adds a little food for thought to your decision ;-)

Cheers

Chill.
