208046 2004-01-17 08:44:00 I have to reinsatll Xp as I suddenly got this message on startup "Windows could not start because of an error in the software, Load needed DLLs for kernel."
I booted from the install cd and ran the"r" option to repair. Windows reported it had fixed one problem but on reboot the problem was still there. I now have to look at re-installing Windows but when I choose this option I get warned that there ia already a windows installation on the partition and it is not recommended to install another.
What should I do?

208048 2004-01-17 10:25:00 That's a bit vague chris...
Windows DOESNT complain about everything.

I was getting an error on my P300.. This is just after its rebooted for the first time and says it has 39 minutes to go...

I never managed to find out why or how to fix it, but seeing as you've had WindowsXP on the PC already it shouldnt be a problem.

Tell it you want to format that partition/hdd with Fat32 or NTFS and carry on your merry way. It shouldnt be too hard to understand, just follow your nose :-)

Hope this helps

Ha.. My bad.. misread it sorry, thought you were getting the error during install.

If you havent already formatted, then you _may_ get away with running a repair on it. You should be right otherwise to tell it to simply format the partition.... (see previous post).

My bad for skimming the post ;-)

BTW - Welcome to Pressf1

208050 2004-01-17 17:41:00 Thanks for the welcome. I have already tried the r option from the recovery console (chkdsk /r) wich found a fault and fixed it supposedly although Windows wont boot still. Apart from that i only have the optin to install and I dont want to format if possible, will lose all my settings etc. I just want to know if it is OK to insatll Windows again in the same partition, will it overwrite the old one or produce a second instance which would totally screw things up?
Thanks.

208051 2004-01-17 17:57:00 I have found it much harder to re-install XP than it was to originaly install it. Some may argue, but I would say the only way ro repair it is to format and re-install.
I would suggest use the recovery console to do a quick format.
Then simply install. No partitions to worry about. Of course you will have to re-do your personalised windows settings.
I would also suggest you get SP1 on a disk. It takes forever to download.

208052 2004-01-17 19:22:00 back up your stuff first maybe. But heres the safe option.

Go through the setup as if you were going to format and install normally, not using the recovery console!! It should detect the existing installation and ask you if you want to repair it. Go yep, and about an hour later ure done...

get back to us..

208053 2004-01-17 20:34:00 Hi Aroc, re your suggestion, have to be a bit careful here. Comp is my (computer-illiterate) brother's, 150km away so I am doing this by"remote control".
His comp is a Dell, only 4 weeks old. The windows cd is not a normal one, its a re-install one.
Do you know for sure that if he opts to format the partition that Windows is on, it will offer to repair? If not, he might end up re-formatting which I really want to avoid if at all possible.
Thanks,
Pat
