Your mum would have even safer browsing and no more popups if she used Opera, Mozilla or Firebird. ;-)

I do not know anything about these. Could you provide me with more info about what they are and how they work, please.

208071 2004-03-08 00:58:00 they are browser alternatives to Internet Explorer. they have pop-up stoppers built in.

note: the new release of Firebird is called Firefox (version 0.8)

208072 2004-03-08 01:07:00 And I would NOT recommend it to a inexperienced person - need plenty of add ons etc that are hard to find and D/L. Keep it simple for learners.

They are alternative browsers to Internet Explorer and work in pretty much the same way but they have handy extra features such as "tabbed browsing". Tabbed browsing means that multiple webpages can be loaded without opening multiple instances of the browser cluttering up the taskbar.

Opera is a popular choice but the free version displays a small advert at the top of its screen. Get Opera from http://www.opera.com/

Firefox (ex Firebird) is also a popular browser amongst the Press F1 regulars and is free with no adverts. Get Firefox from texturizer.net

The browsers are installed just like any other program and there are lots of help pages available for both browsers which are well worth reading in order to get the best from them.

208074 2004-03-08 02:04:00 I agree with Peter H here

Time enough to try alternative browsers once you've mastered the ins & outs of Internet Explorer - like its terminology & functions.

Yes, it has flaws & traps, but it's easier to get advice on how to fix those when it's the most commonly used.

Don't get me wrong - I certainly plan to try altenative browsers myself later ( Can't ignore the many plugs they get from PF1 members whose opinions I respect) but I'm not up to confidence on that yet, in spite of what this forum has taught me in 5months.

Don't try running before you can walk.

(Looks forward to the replies telling me I'm wrong...)

208075 2004-03-08 03:46:00 Opera may possibly be more user-friendly than Firefox and would be no more difficult to "learn" than Internet Explorer. Firefox is also very user-friendly with the default settings but it does require some computer knowledge to take advantage of the extensions, some of which do enhance the browser significantly. tommy (2826)
208076 2004-03-09 10:27:00 The latest Opera 7.23 (on PC World CD) is perfect.
Has a built in Pop up stopper, which you can set for "pop ups by request"
which means that if a Bank log in etc is considered to be a pop up it will allow it if you have selected it. It also has Java just in case you havn't got it as in Windows XP / IE6.

208077 2004-03-09 10:32:00 Your better off dropping Internet Explorer before you learn to use it .

Infact, everyone should stop whatever they are doing right now and download either Firefox or Opera and never touch IE again .

Yes,it is that bad .
