208317 2004-01-18 11:39:00 i just installed my own computer and when i turn it on it keeps telling me that i have a faster processor than i actually have.

my specs are.

gigabyte GA-7n400 Pro2 Mobo
athlon xp 2500
2 x 256 ddr400 Ram
radeon 9600 XT

what happens is that my mobo thinks that my processor is a 3200 when its not.
not only that but it keeps crashing my system whenever i try to use it.
first when i installed win2k it kept giving me a BSOD, then explorer kept crashing, theyre not there anymore.
now when i try to install games they crash before they get to run.

i tried to manually set the cpu jumpers and resetting the bios but that dont work so i left jumpers in automatic.

i have tried replacing ram, replacing the graphics card, but they dont seem to do anything.

any ideas????

208318 2004-01-18 12:34:00 I assume that you have the board speed and the multipliers set correctly...

Dont get me wrong... i am new to this as well... been in to comp's for bout 2 yrs now... and am about 3 months into my A+ course...

My comp is a P4 1.8 on a 400 FSB

The extenal speed (board speed) of my chip is 100Mhz with a steping factor of 4 to equal 400Mhz.......... and the multiplyer is set to 18* so 18 * 100 equals 1.8Ghz

Going off what you said... that you have a 2500XP registering as a 3200Xp leads me to belive that you have got your board or multipler set incorectly high... ie. overclocked...

And as a result... you are running to hot and thats causing all the syslocks and BSoD's...

Pretty new at this but i will asume you board has soft settings... ie. no jumpers... So i guess... go to the BIOS and try to correct the math...

208319 2004-01-18 18:54:00 Have you installed the motherboard drivers? Fire-and-Ice (3910)
208320 2004-01-18 20:06:00 Have you updated the BIOS, there seems to be a few BIOS fixes for this board & some of them seem to be related to problems you are having

208321 2004-01-18 20:12:00 I think that most likely it is your fsb multiplier settings being set wrongly. But that would mean that your CPU is being overclocked which would explain the unstableness. hamstar (4)
208322 2004-01-18 20:40:00 i agree with hamstar that my cpu seems to be overclocked.
funny how it thinks that even though the jumpers are set to automatic settings... sigh well time to find out
