2004-01-17 23:42:00 | Been having trouble with my computer overheating then turning its self off. The warm weather has not helped, but when the CPU's are pushed hard it happens all the time.Motherboard setting is 80.c turn off(CPU temp). The bios display temp is between 55.c and 67.c .The CPU fans are AMD standard, and i have two 80mm case fans(push-pull).Can anyone recommend a better CPU or case cooling arrangement. Or maybe the CPU/heat sink contact is poor (all AMD standard parts) ? Regards Andrewc. | 208152 | 2004-01-18 01:37:00 | I had the same problem with my sisters machine about a fortnight ago. What I ended up doing was getting a ThermalTake Volcano 9 (www.qmb.co.nz) for her CPU which dropped it from a 55 degrees C temperature (on a cold boot) down to 29 degrees. Also, she got case fans - I modded the DSE HDD Cooler a little bit so instead of being designed to cool a HDD it just sucks air straight into the case and that sits in one of the spare CD Bays at the front of her case, along with a case fan at the back to send out the hot air. This dropped her mobo temperature from 37 down to 22. While the noise is slightly more noticible than it originally was, it does provide the cooler machine for her which should keep it happy for a while. CyberChuck

2004-01-18 02:42:00 | The CPUs should not get that hot. :D Are the fans working? Are the case fans working in the right direction? (They should not be blowing out if the PSU fan is blowing out --- the idea is that air should be [b]flowing} freely). | Graham L (2) | |
2004-01-18 03:10:00 | My case fans blow out. And yes thats how they work because the plugs will only go on one way round on the MB unless you want to mutilate them. The idea is for the case fan to draw air across the motherboard and exhaust it out the back because if you push air in with a fam you will actually heat the air up a bit with the friction of the fan on the air.

2004-01-18 04:27:00 | The CPU fans go the right way( the power connector only lets you plug em in one way). The front case fan sucks air in (air going passed the HDD's) The rear case fan sucks air out. At the moment i have the case side open and a desk fan pointing into the box. I am thinking that new fans on the CPU's will help (also i can re do the thermal connection, with some kind of good quality thermal paste). With a total of 8 fans in the box(on various components) i would have thought i would not have this kind of problem. I the moment I dont have any winter heating issues, with this box! So what brand of fan will do it? | andrewc (1143) | |
2004-01-18 05:13:00 | andrewc- firstly what is your room temp and case temp (with side panels on) ?? | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-01-18 06:17:00 | Room temp about 25.c at the moment, current case temp 36.c ,CPU 0 69.c, CPU 1 63.c That is with all covers put back on stable at this temp, computer just on the net (no demanding usage). | andrewc (1143) | |
2004-01-18 06:35:00 | What kind of case do you have? If it is on the small side the air circulation within may be a little restricted. Do you have flat or rounded cables? | tommy (2826) | |
2004-01-18 06:49:00 | ATX mid tower case, things are rather busy in this case. It was on my list to replace it at some point. There are some very smooth looking cases out there today.I had round cables but replaced them with flat ones(these cables dont get in the way of the fans or the air flow). | andrewc (1143) | |
