208144 2004-01-17 21:47:00 I'm trying to install Zone Alarm, but can only get just past the registration page when I get a message saying "Setup is unable to shut down the TrueVector service. Install cannot continue without shutting down the TrueVector service". At this point the install program cancels itself.

I can't find any reference to a file or program called TrueVector anywhere (browse, run, install/remove, explorer etc). Can anyone help?

208145 2004-01-17 22:21:00 Hi WalOne,

TrueVector is part of the ZoneAlarm program. Are you installing a newer ZoneAlarm on top of an existing installation? The best bet would be to close ALL programs that are running and try to re-install.

Check to see if there are any existing portions of ZoneAlarm already installed (look in the programs menu) and if possible use the ZoneAlarm Uninstall option.

Then try a fresh install.

208146 2004-01-18 17:27:00 Thanks Gorela - yes you are right, it's a new install over the top of a (partially installed) earlier version. I say partially because there did not seem to be an uninstall facility, neither did XP uninstall/remove recognise the existence of the previous ZA, so I attempted to delete it. And this is where the problem may lie, TrueVector is alive and well.

Having said all this, an IT guru opines that XP has its own firewall and probably as effective as ZA anyway but without some of the bells + whistles.

Do you or anyone else have any thoughts on the latter? Should I persevere or trust the XP Firewall? I should have mentioned, this is all in aid of establishing a local network, with my PC acting as host, and connected to the net a fair amount of the day.

Run a registry cleaner to clear out the leftovers. See forum's FAQ Registry section.

Win XP's firewall should not be substituted for a good firewall, especially for a PC that is connected to the net a lot. Do a search on the forum for lots of discussion on this. Get rid of the older version of Zone Alarm and install a newer version. Also check out Zone Alarm's pages for help - I don't use ZA but I vaguely remember the possibility of someone saying that this problem is mentioned in their FAQ/help pages.

208148 2005-12-19 19:44:00 If you don't already have found out!!!

Follow these easy steps:
Uninstall ZAlarm > Go kill the ZoneLabs folder in your programs dir (Uninstall won't do that) > Go to Windows\System32. Kill the Zonelabs folder which contains the file vsmon.exe. You'r not quite done yet. You also need to go to Windows\Prefetch folder and find eg. VSMON.EXE-1609C098.pf. Kill this one too cause this is the one that rebuilds and restarts vsmon in the system folder which has the affect that you never get rid of it :) Just as you know! VSMON is the "TrueVector Service" TrueVector TM (ZoneLabs) Well, now your reinstall should work smooth.....
