208031 2004-01-17 05:41:00 I have installed SiSoft Sandra, successfully at last: fussiest install I've ever done, but when I start the program it tells me that it cannot initialize the database. The SiSoft home site told me that I need to make sure that I have the Jet drivers are installed and compatible with MDAC. This is unlikely as the version of Jet on my machine is dated 1998.
I went to the relevent MS website where I found that Jet is apparently part of MS Office. My computer came with Corel Suite8 instead.
This is all over my head! Can someone help?

208032 2004-01-17 06:39:00 this is a classic case of microsoft trying to monopolize everyones computers. email microsoft customer care and ask where to download jet drivers Megaman (344)
208033 2004-01-17 07:17:00 First.

I don't know what Operating system you are using.

Second.
I don't know how you got Sisoft Sandra.

Third.
I have no idea what hardware you run and that may not be important.

I use Sisoft Sandra Pro on a system running WinXP Pro and I also have Office 2003. I had no problem with the install and also have had no problem running Sisoft Sandra.

From the Sisoft Sandra site:-

"NB. We understand that some of you may not like to download MB's of files plus MDAC, Jet and other libraries and would rather get it on a CD. Thus we are offering a CD with the localised SiSoftware Sandra Standard (International) and localised libraries (MDAC 2.8, Jet 4 SP7, DirectX 9b, ActiveSync 3.7.1). Click here."

I don't know if you have the correct version of Sisoft Sandra for your operating system.

In any event you might like to recheck the Sisoft Sandra site rather than checking with the EVIL Microsoft site. :-)

Please feel free to Email Microsoft if you want as another poster has suggested. Why would you though as you have a problem with Sisoft rather than Microsoft?

208035 2004-01-17 14:37:00 Brain not working, huh?

So on a lighter note...."sometimes my computer makes me feel stupid."..

If it's any consolation, QUITE OFTEN my computer makes me feel stupid.

208036 2004-01-18 03:01:00 My cynical approach makes me suggest that if the computer works and is "very stable", why "fix" it?

Like all complex machinery, a computer and its software work best and most reliably if they are left alone.

Graham really means, don't even touch it once its working properly; just leave the pc sitting in the corner (or did you mean that) :D

208038 2004-01-19 02:03:00 Yes, with the covers firmly screwed on. Use it all you like. It's actually best to never turn it off. ;-)

However. SiSoft is intended for "diagnostics" and "optimising". If the computer works stably, it is optimal. Changing or adding bits of the OS is usually a sub-optimal move. Someone asked here whether he should let one of these optimising programmes make the 500-odd adjustments and improvements it wanted to make after "analysing" the system. I asked him whether the computer actually worked with all this "wrong" with it. He was having no problems, so I suggested it might be a good idea to let the computer stay as it was. Working. B-)

208039 2004-01-19 03:10:00 lol it's a 450, just leave it as it is, the minor speed improvements you get out of it won't be worth the effort :D Chances are it'll stuff something up losing some important work etc etc...

208040 2004-01-19 05:07:00 Yes! I think you are right; after all I am planning to get a new computer in 2-3 months. I think I will uninstall and forget it. Vince Vince (406)
