208600 2004-01-20 03:42:00 After all the thud and blunder reaction to Telecom's new Jetstream pricing regime latish last year, and the huge petition (did it ever get sent to Telecom? did it make any ripples?) there seems to have been a deafening silence (i.e. business seems to be as usual with Telecom not giving a tuppeny damn about what its customers have told it).

Are there any new rumours about future reductions in "broadband" tariffs at Telecom???

208601 2004-01-20 03:43:00 Um, that should be "tupenny"... John H (8)
208602 2004-01-20 03:53:00 Or "tuppenny". ;-) Probably they think more of their customers than that: They couldn't give a fourpenny fart. Graham L (2)
208603 2004-01-20 06:38:00 Yes, let's all use strange random words which i can only gather to be colloquialisms that i have not yet heard of to hassle telecom....

And no.

Tuppeny = worth 2 pennies = twopence.
Fourpenny = ditto 4

Actually, we had sixpenny damns in our house.

And we wouldn't give you thruppence for Telecom's system.

But they're already quids in on Jetstream...even if the customers think the prices are as useless as a two-bob watch.

208605 2004-01-20 15:57:00 You must be well off if you can afford 'sixpenny damns.' Octavian. (4897)
208606 2004-01-20 18:16:00 or t'penny or tuppence Greg S (201)

208608 2004-01-20 20:51:00 Sorry about the archaic references - every now and again I forget my age...

Laura's translation is great :D

When I was a kid, our Xmas puds had about six thruppences scattered through them, and (usually) only one or two sixpences... I gather other families who were wealthier used only sixpences. Maybe Laura's family had sixpences in their pud if they were wealthy enough to have sixpenny damns! ;-)

208609 2004-01-20 22:08:00 I read the NZ Herald yesterday and it would seem Telecom's in for and already receiving some stiff competition from Whoosh Wireless.

Whoosh has the capital base to build the necessary infrastructure it requires for it's network and also there has been tremendous interest in Whoosh from huge companies in Europe.

The head honcho at Whoosh (his name escapes me at this time) said that Whoosh at present has enough capital to provide services to about 70% of NZ, covering the other 30% will be a matter of time.

Also they have just announced that their voice service will be up and running soon and market guru's say that Whoosh's proposed prices are going to give Telecom a really good run for their money.

So I would say Telecom's time of resting on their laurels in the the knowledge that they cannot be toppled is about to come to an end in the near future.

Whoosh is faster and more efficient and because they are the new kid on the block they provide better troubleshooting services for internet ( and soon for their voice services) because they want to have a good client base.

I mean what better way to get a boom for the voice service than to get all the current internet customers to take up a voice service package.

I for one am looking in to switching over to Whoosh, I'm really impressed with what they offer and I've spoken to quite a few of their Customer Service agents on the phone and they actually know what they are talking about. This is they great thing about Whoosh, the technology that they use isn't child's play, therefore they need staff who are competant and skilled... which they have I might add.

Honestly I can only think of one thing right now.... broadband internet is going to take a turn for the best as Whoosh becomes more popular.... Telecom is gonna have to pull a rabbit out of it's hat very soon and they will have no choiuce but to make it a fast, cheap and uncapped one ... if you know what i mean ;)

cheers
