208579 2004-01-20 01:14:00 Another little one out there. Noticed that the current issue of "NetGuide" didn't rate it very highly.

208580 2004-01-20 01:56:00 Haven't seen the Netguide article in question but will comment that Netguide always seem very "Pro Norton". Nigel Horrocks has also in the past been quite vocal of Nortons and given away product on his radio slots.

I still find AVG to give me and my family what we need in the way of free, effective, easy to use, scheduled virus scans and updates without hogging resources that other virus scanners seem to do. None of us has had a virus slip through the cracks.

I have no doubt that Nortons is good, however the people I have helped rescue a PC riddled with problems never bothered to update (ie pay extra) and so were under the inmpression that they were protected due to the reputatioin the product has. Removing it can be a nightmare too.

That was my spout off for the day lol.

208581 2004-01-20 03:09:00 My sentiments exactly. Whilst Norton's does the jobs very well, it can & has caused problems. Their review does state "May be intrusive at times" Also $150.00 is a bit steep. Does include a firewall & adblocker, but I think most of us have these allready.

208582 2004-01-20 04:44:00 I've just finished using AVG to remove 17 different viruses/trojans from a computer (the owner will install anything if they promise pr0n). It has done a very good job, but I did find it annoying that it could detect a virus but then fail to remove it because the executable was running.

It really should have with killed the process or removed it from the startup list and rebooted instead of leaving me to do it (and it doesn't run in safe mode either).

Also the cleaning process seems to only delete the file without cleaning up left over registry entries.

I still prefer it over nortons. If I had to pay for AV protection I would consider their paid version so I guess the free version has been successful.

You are correct Windows version of AVG does not run in safe mode but if you go to the grisoft directory you will find a dos version in there that will run in safe mode
