209031 2004-01-21 20:10:00 If you mean what will happen if you transfer a fully configured bootable version of XP to another PC as the bootable drive, then it will require activation .

If it is a full retail version of XP it should not be a problem . If it refuses the activation, a phone call and an explanation to MS should suffice .

If this is an OEM version (supplied with the original PC as a package) then no, its not guaranteed to re-activate and MS are unlikely to help . This is because OEM versions are sold cheaper and are simply not transferrable to new systems, they are meant to die with old hardware .

More importantly, you may strike real trouble booting a different motherboard when you transfer though .

The old hard drive has all the drivers loaded for the original hardware, and you will be "force feeding" these drivers to the new hardware .

If the hardware differs at all, then real problems accrue .

In this case a re-installation is best on the new hardware .

209032 2004-01-23 09:39:00 You will have to reinstall the XP on the new computer as all the drivers will be set for the old one. Having said that, if you have copied all the software across (I use Norton Ghost) and wish to avoid reinstalling all the software it may be worth letting XP sort itself out, which it will do eventually. Run 'Norton Utes Win Doctor' it will sort out any dead links and Registry entries.

On the subject of Activation, either way it will need reactivating. If it has not been activated for more than 4 months you should be able to do it in the normal way on line. If this fails, tell Microsoft that you have fillted a new Motherboard etc and they will allocate you another code.

209033 2004-01-23 09:45:00 I have read your post again & note that you are transfering the whole drive, not ghosting it across. In this case just let it sort out.

The remarks re Activation & Norton Utes still stand.
