209034 2004-01-21 19:13:00 Is there a device that will allow me to connect to a remote device that is using a RS-232 connection. Either by using a LAN or wireless connection. I am trying to connect to a set of scales whose recorded data can be accessed via its serial port. At the moment a laptop has to be taken to the plant to download the data. Attempts to extend the RS232 connection by using repeaters, boosters etc have failed due to interference within the plant.
Thanks in advance

209035 2004-01-22 05:54:00 What we used to use in the days of real computers, with terminals was modems .

If you get an "external" one (that is, standalone) for the scales, and a twisted pair cable to connect it to the one at the computer you will be in business .

You will need to set them up to work in "leased line"mode, because there is no dial tone because you don't need (or want) any contribution from Telecom;-) . Have one as "originate, and the other as "answer" . The scales will probably be 9600 baud, so you should have no problems getting "miles" .

209036 2004-01-22 07:39:00 You can get RS232 to RS485/RS422 converters relatively economically. RS485/422 is more noise resistant than RS232 as it uses differential transmission (which cancels out noise). RS485 requires two wire connection between nodes, and shares the wires for both rx/tx, which means you need a signal from the communication devices to request transmission use on the 'bus'. This can complicate the implementation, although there are smart rs485 converters that self switch rx/tx. Otherwise, use RS422, which is the same electrically as RS485, but uses 2 pairs of wires; 1 for rx and 1 for tx, so with only two devices connected, no switching is required.
A more expensive option would be to install RS232/fibre.
RS485 is commonly used in industry, as the physical layer.
