208871 2004-01-20 23:37:00 Hi,

My PC had a booboo recently, and I managed to get my Documents and settings folder out.

I've got everything back on the rails again, but I'm trying to get my emails back. I had previously had Office 2000 with Outlook installed. When I put Windows back on, I installed Office XP, but I couldn't get my emails back by pasting the files back into the appropriate folders. So I reverted back to Office 2000, but XP seems to have done something to it, and again it doesn't work.

How would you advise I get around this problem?

Cheers,

Erin

208872 2004-01-20 23:57:00 Do a search for *.pst. The Outlook email stuff has a pst extension. Open up Outlook and import this pst file and you should have your old mail, contacts etc back.. paulw (1826)
208873 2004-01-22 06:06:00 The files are still there, but unreadable, Erin? I think I'd panic.;-)
Aren't there programmeswhich recover mail files? This will bump the thread up, anyway.

208874 2004-01-22 06:40:00 Look for the Inbox Repair Tool (I think it's something like scanpst.exe - most likely in the Program Files/Office folder tree).

Run this and apply it to your .pst file (take a copy of the .pst first). It should repair the file and your probs will be solved.

208875 2004-01-22 10:01:00 Hi,

Office XP left a lot of junk in the registry after I removed it... I managed to pick out most of this, which got me able to put my emails back in by pasting the files into:

c:\documents and settings\userlogin\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\

However, my registry meddling had obviously had extra repercussions, because Outlook got cranky and started crashing.

Eventually I decided to re-install windows again, seeing as I'd just done it anyway, which finally fixed the problem...

:)
