209235 2004-01-22 04:15:00 a m8 been telling me how bored he is and that no one hardly texts him and last nite i mentioned that i wanted to make a few websites in the next couple of weeks and this morning he came around with a design on paper and all and its a website where people can post their cellphone numbers...NZ based or International that can text to and from NZ, for others to text eachother, its kind of like penpals or epals, but its textpals...

I'm thinking its cool but is it actually legal to do that? coz i dont wanna make it and find the cops on my doorstep coz 2 people met up and one hurt the other or something.....i know its hard to determine whos signing up for perfect good reasons not to hurt or harm...but where does the website maker, owner and whoever else is involved stand?

What do you people think?

Cheers

209236 2004-01-22 04:21:00 Sounds all right to me.

So long as you make it clear to the end users what they are entering into, and include disclaimers, and that sort of stuff, you should be fine.

Say things like "the website operators & designers, or anyone affiliated with this site, accept no responsibility whatsoever for harm or damages that may come to you for using the services or information provided on this site". Make it clear to people that their information will not be used for the purposes of marketing, and that their information will not be disclosed to any parties unless required to do so by law (and perhaps the operators/maintainers/designers of the site for purposes of moderation, etc).

Essentially, you put the onus on them to be careful about what they do, although you would be obliged to tell them that, perhaps they may meet stalkers and the like.

209237 2004-01-22 04:26:00 Forgot to say, it would most likely be appealing to people on the 027 network, seeing as they get unlimited texting for $10. agent (30)
209238 2004-01-22 04:31:00 hes planning on putting a small agreement thing that they agree to when signing up, just basically something small 5 lines or so coz we know ppl dont like reading much of those things, just to say that once they enter mobile number and click submit, no one apart from themselves is responsible for themselves really and on bottom of each page that is involved in website there will be that disclaimer that u mentioned...

and yeah the telecom users would probably use it good if they find it...

209239 2004-01-22 04:33:00 Yet again I forgot something :8}

You might recall M2; two people met on the M2 forums and got something going, so there's no reason why anyone shouldn't via text messaging. The dangers are there, but most of the time you wouldn't run across them.

209240 2004-01-22 04:35:00 M2? i seem to be missing something here? csinclair83 (200)
209241 2004-01-22 04:38:00 Sounds like a good concept...the only problems I see are, how to make sure the number being posted actually belongs to the postee.Sort that one out and then all you have to do is beat an enterprising person, who got the idea here, from setting it up first.

209242 2004-01-22 04:45:00 im going 2 get an 027 phone soon with $10 txt, and would only join if there were 2 things

1. there was verification. an activation code was texted to the person to complete the registration

2. there was an option to report weirdos

209243 2004-01-22 04:56:00 Ohhh thanks for those 2 good ideas megaman i'll tell him and see what else hes actually coming up wif as i told him 2 do the planning etc and i'll make the website for him :-) csinclair83 (200)
209244 2004-01-22 05:07:00 My understanding is that Chris has an 027 phone (but his friend might not), so I guess verification wouldn't be hard for him, but since ICQ2SMS went, there isn't really much in the way of having an automated SMS message sent to people for confirmation.

That would imply manually checking people awaiting verification (this chould be done with an email being sent to someone for each person wanting verification, or else checking the database every so often for new people), or else some expense to find an automated web2SMS solution.

Also, as per any service, the option to report weird people could be abused, and people could falsely accuse someone of being a weird person. This, then, would also need to be enhanced and/or limited, such as only being able to report one weird person in a period of seven days, and also having the ability to rate friendly people - I don't know many people who would falsely accuse someone of being friendly (aside from the person of accusation themself) , so if a sort of star system was implemented, false accusations of weirdness could be contested by other people who know better (or otherwise)

Both ideas would really require that people have an account in which they can sign in on the website, and of course, you cannot rank yourself.

Otherwise, those are good points.
