209216 2004-01-22 20:05:00 Try right-click on AVG icon on bottom right and close. Now try and open OE. If it opens OK, may pay to uninstall AVG, download latest and install that. Pheonix (280)
209217 2004-01-23 21:07:00 Thanks Phoenix, had better luck in Hanmer Springs.

AVG only appears as icon on desktop.

Have unticked AVG e-mail screen and now Outlook Express sits there on the bottom taskbar showing New Mail, but double clicking and it only stares back at you.

Will have to get my other girlfriend Lynne's computer wiz I am thinking!.

Oh by the way the Sysbckup file is amongst the time zone that my Lynne (yes there are 2 Lynnes) stuffed up and the clock screen won't change time either, it's only out a couple of minutes.

Shall I try the AVG uninstall and see what happens, but I think it's a bit deeper than that.

I uninstalled the Smiley Software the other day, do you think it was unhappy about being kicked off?.

Any other help would be much appreciated.

209218 2004-01-23 22:43:00 Sounds a bit more serious, in that the inbox is corrupt.

You could try searching for inbox.* and cut it to a folder on your desktop.
Open OE and if it opens fine (there will be no messages), then try file-import-messages and see if the transfer OK.
If they don't, then you will require a program called DBextract to "pull" them out of the inbox.dbf, so you can read them. But htey will not be able to go back into your inbox.
To restore, just copy that inbox.dbf back to where it was originally.
NOTE, when copying/cutting or moving these files, ensure OE is CLOSED.

209219 2004-01-24 00:11:00 Phoenix thanks for the Msconfig suggestion. Took out a couple of ticks on things that didn't look familiar and Outlook Express is back.

Will unistall AVG and download it again.

Thanks again.

209220 2004-01-25 01:44:00 Pheonix one other thing, now that OE6 is back to normal. Jumping between the 3 boxes is much quicker now, Inwards, Sent and Deleted.

Have Keerio anti virus on pc as a second option, is this as good as AVG?.

Kerio is not an antivirus program like AVG, it's a firewall. Keep both of them. ;-)

209222 2004-01-25 02:00:00 Whatever you do, do not run two AntiVirus programs at once .

Its not even a good idea to have two installed, as some background activity can remain even though you think you have de-activated one .

Thats as bad as having none in some cases, as each gets their actions blocked by the other when trying to intercept a Virus, and they both fail .

AVG is very good (price considered!)

Kerio is a firewall however, or have they released a new product?
A firewall is very different to antivirus .

Perhaps you could elaborate?

209223 2004-01-25 02:22:00 Fire-and-Ice thanks for that. Keerio has been sitting quietly in the background for so long, I thought it was an Anti Virus software.

Does one need two firewalls then, Zone Alarm and Keerio?.

See posting above on how slow it is to move between e-mail folders with AVG active.

Thanks agin,

209224 2004-01-25 02:26:00 godfather thanks once again, see previous post for explanation

Will put AVG back on, but it slows down the switching between e-mail folders.

209225 2004-01-25 02:29:00 My comments on 2 Firewalls is as per 2 AV programs.
Not a good idea.

The only dfference is with the built in XP firewall, as its already integrated with the OS, it seems to co-habit with another firewall OK.

Not so for Kerio and ZA though. Choose 1 and uninstall the other.
