209718 2004-01-29 04:18:00 Whoops, yea koonaking is catching miniature freshwater crayfish/lobster things...also called yabbies etc. You throw in the net with a dead fish in it, and they'll crawl into the net to get the fish and then you pull it out of the water real fast. You have to pick them up behind the head cos they have big pincers.

Good fun. Some people had them on the barbeque but mostly we used them as live bait to catch some brim (white fish) that lives in the river.

209719 2004-01-29 04:39:00 So, PoWa, let me get this right. You use a fish to catch a Koonak then you use the Koonak to catch another fish. Do you repeat the cycle again. Do you get to eat anything?

;) just kidding, just envious.

Thanks - they're called koura here, and some people are now growing them commercially. We used to catch them in the creek where I lived. Yummy...

lmao! :^O :^O seems like a weird cycle ay! Nah we ate the fish we caught actually. Tasted quite good hehehe. We used a smallish fish that we bought then cut them open so the koonaks could smell the food.

One day we caught like 50+ and then it was christmas so we didn't get to use them for anything, then we forgot about them for another few days. By this stage they were dying off, and then a few more days they were all dead and stinking out the place. On the day we left someone threw them all onto the garden - hopefully the owners of the house won't notice 50 dead things killing off the plants nearby ;\

Soo many different names aye. Koonaks/yabbies/marin/koura.... lol
