| 209748 | 2004-01-24 23:26:00 | On my win xp machine which is called "AMD" even when I can see all the other computers on the network ok it disappears occasionally and then reappears later on sometime for no apparent reason.. I open up my network places and and look under "wrokgroup" and see all the pcs but AMD listed.. the cable is fine the AMD pc is the gateway to the internet even when you cannot see "AMD" on the AMD machine itself or the other pc's I can still access the AMD gateway to the internet and so all the pc's have internet access... The AMD machine is using a USB DLink ADSL modem. any ideas... sometimes it disappears for a day or so so no one can access the amd machine except the internet and the AMD machine can always see and access all the other pc's fine any ideas ? |

What network protocols are in operation? Obviously TCP/IP is but are there any others? I have a simple home network with 2 XP and 1 98 machine with only TCP/IP and the main XP gateway m/c set as the Masterbrowser. The other two have the Masterbrowser capability disabled. The main machine is always on. My network is totally reliable (oh, shouldn't have said that!!). Let's have some more network setup detail. Cheers. |

| 209753 | 2004-01-25 11:00:00 | OK. Try this link for info on master browser. www.smallnetbuilder.com However, another thought. I see you have your duplex/speed set to Full Duplex. This may be a red herring but if cards can't handle full duplex properly it can produce 'funny' results like machines not seeing each other. Try setting all your cards to Half Duplex just to see. I know I had a problem with this and since then always set to Half Duplex. Good luck. |

| 209754 | 2004-01-25 20:40:00 | Very interesting i will have to see how it goes now as the Main machine the one that disappears occasionally (AMD) had master browser disabled !! I have not looked at the other pc's yet but as most of the time i have Xandros linux up on it (only use XP on that pc to watch dvd's on the tv as i have not found a decent app to make the monitor and tv screen display the exact same size for some reason) I will probably shift everything over to Xandros in a few months when i have some time of work (apart from the xp dual boot) cheers I'll let you know how it goes shane |
