210179 2004-01-26 20:19:00 I am using the latest MSN Messenger to speak to a friend, I now find for some reason the microphone wont work.
I can hear him and he can talk to me, but it is a bit frustrating that I have to type my replies back to him
I have tested the system with different microphones but I still get the sound of silence
Any help would be appreciated, not too technical as I am in my seventies .
Thanks

210180 2004-01-26 22:59:00 Hi there HB

You probably have the microphone muted in your sound card control panel, however it would save a lot of guessing if you could post details of your computer, such as the operating system and any other technical specs that might be relevant to sound.

Cheers

210181 2004-01-27 00:03:00 Things to check:

In the windows mixer (Start Menu-All Programs (or Programs in win9x/me)-Accessories-Entertainment-Volume Control. Make sure "Microphone" isn't muted.

In the windows mixer again, go to Options-Properties, tick "Recording", then OK. Make sure there is the "Select" box ticked under the microphone

Make sure you have the microphone plugged into the right socket - usually Pink - either on the motherboard, or the sound card. If it is plugged into the modem (where the telephone line plugs in), then it might not work.

210182 2004-01-27 04:10:00 Hi HB
In your thread of 2 January you said the microphone was working. Has it now stopped again.
I know my mate and I have been down this track and we could not get the microphone to work on MSN messenger. In the finish we had to download Yahoo messenger and we could then use the microphones to communicate.
If you enter "Microphone MSN" in the search box above you will see a lot of useful threads on this topic.
Hope this helps

Yes, please let us know what you did. I can't for the life of me get my mic to send to others using XP and msn or windows messenger. Mic works using Yahoo, in games and sound recorder fine. Cam works sweet but the mic just won't connect :( Firewall has been turned off.

True - when it did work (previous version - maybe I should go back to that?) my son's conversations with his mates consisted of mainly

"can you hear me?"
"what?"
"shaddup I'm trying to say something"
"this is cool isn't it, now what can we talk about?"
"go away, I'm playing a game"

Funny how we want things badly when we can't have them but once we get them we aren't interested anymore. Its the journey thats half the fun/attraction. Once you reach your destination/achieve your goal you immediately lose half the pleasure. ;-)
