209983 2004-01-26 02:24:00 Last night I was reformatting my sisters computer. I was using my monitor, keyboard and mouse as she only brought the HDD over.

Anyways, the reason she asked me to reformat it (clean install) was because it had all sorts of errors coming up. Well after the install, the errors kept coming up so we thought she might have had a faulty HDD since she had recently brought it second-hand.

Then I went to plug my computer back in and start it up and everything was okay. Until this morning. I started up the computer then went to get my cuppa tea and when I came back the computer hadn't started up.

The little red light for the HDD was continuously "on" instead of flickering when there is HDD action and the little green light for the CD-ROM was on but nothing was ticking over like it usually does. So I thought I would put the WinXP CD in to see if it gave me a recovery option or something. But the CD-ROM or the CD-Writer would not open.

Then I thought to put the WinXP setup disk in the floppy drive and restart and nothing happened. All I hear is the fan but nothing else ticking over. Has anyone had this problem before and is there anything I can do about it? I hope someone can help me. Thank you in advance.

209984 2004-01-26 02:34:00 check all the cables that you had unpluged the day bofore.... robsonde (120)
209985 2004-01-26 02:34:00 mayby its the heat but this post is hard to understand.

did she bring over just the hardrive which you connected to your pc or did she bring over the main box?

what errors where coming up?

as far as your pc goes sounds like some sort of hardware failure, either powersupply or ram failure off the top of my head. don't forget to check for loose leads, really easy to knock one loose.

209986 2004-01-26 02:51:00 Yes, I checked all the cables. I was only using my keyboard, monitor and mouse for my sisters computer. And when I had finished with her computer, I unplugged all my stuff from her computer and then plugged all mine in last night and everything was working fine. I even sent a couple of emails!

It wasn't until this morning that the computer wouldn't start.

When I push the power button, there are no beeps or sounds. The only thing I see is the red HDD light, but instead of flickering like it use to, it is now continuously on. The same with the CD-Rom, the green light is continously on and when I push to eject, nothing happens. The only sound I hear is the fan. No beeps, nothing ticking over. And the monitor is on.

My sister brought over the main box. So I plugged my monitor, keyboard and mouse at the back of her computer. After I finished, I plugged everything back into my computer and it worked fine until this morning. Maybe it's just a coincidence? But now I need to know how I can sort my computer out so that I can access the HDD and back up everything just in case it is HDD failure.

I can't even get into DOS. It's just not doing anything. :-(

209987 2004-01-26 02:58:00 If you're comfortable working around inside the box, (remembering to take appropriate anti-static and electrical safety measures) try removing her hard drive and fitting it into your computer on the second IDE channel, and see if you can read it in Windows Explorer. If you can, then it's likely the problem lies elsewhere, eg the PSU (power supply unit), CPU (processor) or the motherboard Greg S (201)
209988 2004-01-26 03:00:00 Sorry - ignore my previous post - I didn't read properly and I thought it was still sister's computer that was having problems. But perhaps you can try it in reverse... putting your hard drive into her machine. Greg S (201)
209989 2004-01-26 03:05:00 Errr . . . sorry for not explaining very well . The only reason I brought up my sisters computer is because I thought maybe there was some sort of coincidence why my computer is no longer working after I had my monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into hers .

But keeping in mind that my computer DID work last night after plugging everything back into my computer . It's only since this morning that it no longer wants to work . So at this present time, I am not even thinking about her computer problems, because now I've got my own!

So my problem is . . . my computer no longer starts up . When I push the power button, the red HDD light stays on continuously instead of flickering like it use to . The green CD-ROM light stays on continuously and when I push "eject", nothing happens . Usually I can hear it checking the A:drive first and then the C:drive . It's not the quietest computer, but today it is very silent . :-(

209990 2004-01-26 03:09:00 Okays, gonna try and put my HDD in her computer and see if I can read it from Windows Explorer... BBS Raewyn (946)
209991 2004-01-26 03:13:00 Yup I understand. But you can still test the hard drive by borrowing sister's computer and fitting your hard drive into it.

I'm not the greatest tech on the planet, but I kinda suspect it may be motherboard failure, assuming if as you say all connections are nice and tight.

209992 2004-01-26 03:13:00 Just note that if the computers are not identical, expect errors when you try to boot from your sister's HDD.

The errors will be from minor to complete failure to boot, depending just how bad the driver mismatch between the installed hardware and that which the other HDD thiks is installed....

Just don't go blaming the wrong thing....
