210036 2004-01-26 20:21:00 Well, my Dad talked to someone who made them, and he said he would never drink out of them for hygiene reasons. Apparantly something to do with algae i think. Gross. mejobloggs (264)

I'm on holiday this week - no water coolers for me anyway, and the sprogs are back at school :D

Pity there's such a pathetic swell at the Mount at the moment :( Anyone in Tauranga fancy 9 holes of golf sometime this week?

If only :)

Did you ever try the pitch'n'drive place out at Papamoa? That was the closest I ever came to playing a round of golf :D Ah well... they bulldozed it a couple of months back :(

As I understand it, it is to do with the frequency of the filter changes.

They gradually build up with a coating of "gunk" at which time they should be changed. If changed regurlarly, then all is OK.

However, if the filter is left for too long, it finally dumps the lot in one hit and the next person gets more than they bargained for. :(

210041 2004-01-27 07:07:00 Isn't the purpose of a filter to stop that sort of thing happening? To which it shouldn't, unless the filter has holes large enough for algae to fit through, in which case I wouldn't call it a filter. agent (30)
210042 2004-01-27 07:31:00 The water in our machines arrives in sealed bottles, which are placed upside down into the dispensor, breaking the seal. The dispensor has a small (1- 2 litre) cooling chamber made of stainless steel, in which the water sits in and cools down and is replenished by the bottle at the top when water is taken from the tap.

The company we lease the machine from cleans the cooling chamber, taps and changes the filter (if any) too I guess every two months or so.

Algae, etc doesn't seem to be a problem. The water tastes great too!

I have played at Pitch and Drive Mike .. shame that it was left to grow over and now they are doing that development out there at Papamoa. Progress, it's a double edged sword.

Oh, by the way - I have a friend of a friend who has a cousin whos boyfriend works for the company that delivers lettuces to the local fish and chip shop and he says he would never eat food from there as he knows what they do to the food there .... ;)

210044 2004-01-27 08:37:00 Sorry, I was thinking of those units that householders install near their sinkbenches, or small businesses that do their own filter changing. Those units would definitely be only as good as their filter maintenance schedule.

When a filter gets totally clogged up, the water keeps going past it without any filtering and it passes the high concentration of muck on the way. Some of that muck which can no longer stick to the filter will release and go with the flow. But for the filter you would have drunk it all anyway, but over a long period of time. That would not be as bad as a high concentration all at one time. Naturally it depends on the design of the unit, but whether a stream of water passing a clogged up filter before you drink it, or a high concentration of sediment fallen to the bottom of the container from which you are drinking, it makes for a much higher dose of "yuk" compared to a clean filtered supply.

I am happy to drink water from those companies that market it in dispensers, as they do have a high standard of service maintenance, but when I see a "do it youself" unit, I prefer ordinary tap water unless I can trust the frequency of filter changing. :)
