209900 2004-01-25 20:07:00 Relevant system specs:
P4 2.4ghz (533mhz FSB version) with standard Pentium 4 heatsink/fan
nVidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card
400w psu
Case has vents all along side and rear, but no vents on front.

The story is that the only external facing fan is the one on the back of the PSU. Up until now (for fear of overheating), I've been using an old PSU fan "modified" with appropriate plugs to provide an extra case fan, sucking air out at the back just below the PSU Fan. The PC has been running very very cool, however in the past 2 days that extra fan has become obnoxiously noisy, sounding like someone is using an electric drill and trying to cut themselves out of the case!!

So in people's past experience, would I really need that extra fan? I will monitor case/cpu temperatures for today and see what happens.

209901 2004-01-25 21:43:00 my system is similar it's a p4 2.4c Ghz, 800FSB, with 512Mb ram and GeForce Fx 5200 video card.........well just for fun I mounted a small fan on the vid card, (which i dont bother running overclocked anyway cause I'm not into gamin). Anyway my case has no holes at the front either but it does haev some on the sides.........smallish in a pretty pattern lol........it came with PSU fan inbuilt of course and an extra fan just below that about the same size blowing out.......and the CPU fan which is pretty big about the same size as the others.......I've since put one more fan in behind the covers for the spare cd drives etc in the front to suck some more air in .........however I dont think I really needed it...........

anyway the most the system has ever got to with normal surfing and putting around and running the occasional program is about 38c on the motherboard.........currently at 10.30 this morning the cpu is running at 26c and the mobo at 31c...........that's about usual...........it'll only really heat up on a very hot day and then not much at all............I once overclocked it to 3.0Ghz (and it ran fine !!!) then ran a 'burn in test' using sisoft sandra well the temps went to about 48c at max........so nah........no probs.........I assume you gotta temp monitor prog ?.....what's it telling you ?

209903 2004-01-25 21:52:00 noisy fan probably means the bearings going ............dump it .....replace it drcspy (146)
209904 2004-01-25 23:59:00 Probably not. The stock heat sink/fan for your CPU is very efficient Greg S (201)
209905 2004-01-26 00:10:00 Thanks guys. I've been running this PC all morning without the extra fan - only been playing DVDs, so nothing CPU intensive - and the CPU has stayed around 35 degrees or so, which is very similar to when I do have the extra case fan. somebody (208)
209906 2004-01-26 01:02:00 There have been so many questions about PC temperatures recently that even someone like me who has no reason to suspect mine is running hot has come to realise this is an important topic for many.

What intrigues me is how you all know your temps? That's something I haven't come across yet in my exploration of the innards.

So please may I hijack this thread long enough to ask how I find out what mine are?

209907 2004-01-26 01:09:00 Laura - my Asus motherboard's CDrom includes a software utility for monitoring fan speeds, CPU and motherboard temps etc. Probably your motherboard's manufacturer's website has such a utility to download for yours. Also there are various third party monitoring applications you could probably find on the Net Greg S (201)
209908 2004-01-26 01:13:00 Thanks Greg S

Something new to explore......

209909 2004-01-26 02:09:00 why do people quote cpu temps when they are dealing with CASE fans??? very strange ?:| . the cpu is not the only thing to get hot. no point in having a cool cpu and a cooking chipset/ram/hardrive/vidcard etc. tweak'e (174)
