209887 2004-01-25 20:31:00 Try MPlayer (www.mplayerhq.hu) for the VCD's.

Make sure you read the installation (www.mplayerhq.hu) section first, especially the bit about configuring the compilation for the GUI (www.mplayerhq.hu) version of MPlayer (unless you want a command line only player).

209888 2004-01-26 07:42:00 I don't rate myself as knowing much about playing video on PCs - but I use Ogle which I installed into RH9. There were some prerequesits needed - the complete list of rpms that I used are shown below:

alsa-lib-0.9.8-2.i386.rpm
libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.fr.i386.rpm
libdvdread-0.9.4-ogle1.i386.rpm
ogle-0.9.2-ogle1alsa.i586.rpm
ogle_gui-0.9.2-ogle1.i386.rpm

I expect RH8 will be very similar.

Seems to play my Monty Python DVD fine!

209889 2004-01-26 08:42:00 You should be able to add --enable-gui to your ./configure if you're not downloading the rpm's (Compiling will give you mencoder which is highly worth it!)

Isnt a VCD simply an mpeg file renamed?

VLC (VideoLAN Client) is another good player to look into.
Ogle is great for DVD's etc, but I'd HIGHLY recommend you get ogle-gui to go with it (Then just run Ogle normally and you'll get the controls).

If you _are_ watching DVD's.. Enable dma - They only set it to by default with RH 9

Hope this helps
