210606 2004-01-28 01:25:00 Hi, I just got a laptop, a dell inspiron 8600. It runs great, but in games (which I run in 1600x1200) after a period of time, the graphics quality starts to degrade. Short horizontal lines appear all over the screen, mostly in contrasting areas. This gets worse until it's impossible to see.
Specs:
15.4" WUXGA screen. Runs at 1920x1200, and in 1600x1200 it does a vertical letterbox style thing. That's why I use that resolution.
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600pro 128MB.
1.4ghz Intel Pentium M Centrino.
512MB RAM
40GB HDD
Windows XP Professional.

So far I have experienced this in No One Lives Forever 2 and Age of Mythology.
Thanks in advance.

210607 2004-01-28 01:54:00 interesting - my friend has an ATI 9000 something card and he has to have his up on at 1024x768 for playing 3D games or else it gets distorted and starts to "shimmer". the lower the resolution - the worse it gets. we havent been able to fix it yet though. agent_24 (4330)
210608 2004-01-28 02:42:00 If you "just got it" and there's a guarantee, back to the shop. It shouldn't do that. :D Graham L (2)
210609 2004-01-28 02:56:00 I reckon it's overheating or something, cause it does it when the fan is going hardout. Wilky (776)

210611 2004-01-28 07:34:00 I think the graphics card has inadequete cooling. Stupid dell. Wilky (776)
210612 2004-01-29 00:35:00 Is it under guarantee? If it is, don't waste time abusing Dell to us; give them a chance to fix it. That is not normal operation. Something is wrong with it. Graham L (2)
210613 2004-01-29 01:19:00 I've emailed them about it, hoping for a reply soon.
It shouldn't be doing this when it's brand new. Why do I always get the defective products?

210614 2004-01-29 20:10:00 Hello, hello, I plugged my crappy CRT monitor in, switch to that, and no more distortion! It's the SCREEN that's overheating. I felt the base of it and it is extremely hot, and that's where the distortion is worst... but it goes away the moment the game is minimized or quit.........
And Dell still haven't responded.

210615 2004-01-30 02:21:00 It will be the inverter for the screen backlight. STOP USING IT . Haven't they got an 800 number? Graham L (2)
