210519 2004-01-28 02:39:00 There are a number of sites which have antenna designs to get better than the nominal range. Try Osirosis (osirosis.urbanna.net) for some very cheap and easy to make designs.
Cat5 is out because:
1)Illegal to do a wire off your own property.
2)Although you might get 150m with Ethernet, I doubt if you'd get 1 km.

210522 2004-01-28 23:39:00 all this talk about cans....

lets move away from me building something (tho id love to, hahaha, im lazy)... and to where i can actually look at premade (as in factories) antennas. I see some for like $1000, and some for $200.

My main problem is that my PC is no where near the back of the house, and i need a separate module that can convert wifi to ethernet, acting as an extension on a cable, for my already wire-networked house.

Thats called a Wireless Access Point.
Very commonly available, you need one that takes a coaxial cable or the built in aerial though.

Your dish will need to be high-gain and very directional. Probably quite expensive in reality.

Don't plan on running the coax too far, as well as being expensive its very lossy at 2+ GHz.

210524 2004-01-29 03:34:00 Yes i know a Wireless Acess Point will work, but they are designed to accept many connections, and not all the ones Ive seen can go to bridge mode :D

Thanks tho, know any cheap ones that do?
