210959 2004-01-29 07:39:00 Ok so I'm running winXP and I've made sure in the BIOS that Ultra DMA transfer is on auto and I've checked in the device manager to make sure that for the Primary IDE channel properties its set to use 'DMA if available'. But it says it is currently only in PIO mode, consequently my already stuffed system is running like a dog.

So.... how can I make it run in UDMA mode? I know the drive supports it?

210960 2004-01-29 08:07:00 I can think of only a few things...

1) Check the jumpers (on mobo and hdd)
2) Take out, turn on, put back in.

If you can try a diff hdd and see what happens....

210961 2004-01-29 08:19:00 Which jumpers on the hard drive? The slave/master/cable connect/ ones?

Could a new ide cable fix it?

210962 2004-01-29 09:00:00 What is your HDD make and Model ...
and what chipset does your Mobo run??

Some older seagates seem to take issue with some VIA chipsets ...

210963 2004-01-29 09:21:00 I have a new Western Digital 20GB that does that when it is set to master, and I couldnt get it to run in UDMA. When it is set as slave then lo and behold it runs in UDMA, but I have no idea why it does that. I went through the same as you, tearing my hair out wondering what to do. Terry Porritt (14)
210964 2004-01-29 10:18:00 Yea its a Seagate Baracuda 20gb U-Series drive 5400rpm. Model# ST320413. Also running a Chaintech motherboard with VIA chipset - I think.

Its in as master at the moment due to the problem I'm having in this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). Before when it was in as slave it was in UDMA mode... so maybe its not liking master. Ahh what a pain. Any more ideas? Otherwise I'll have to bear the slowness till I get my data recovered and then a replacement drive :(

210965 2004-01-29 10:41:00 Seagate Barracuda and VIA on XP is a standard problem

To fix this first Install the VIA Hyperion Driver, get from here (downloads.viaarena.com)

Next get the VIA IDE Miniport Driver from here (downloads.viaarena.com) and install it.

After you reboot, you will be able to click on the VIA miniport driver icon on the systemtray and set your drive (if not already in UDMA) to UDMA under XP

I have an identical setup, Seagate Barracuda 30GB drive, MSI Motherboard based on VIA chipset, and the same problem and got fixed by doing the above

Cheers

210966 2004-01-29 19:44:00 Dammit, I sense a pattern:

My seagate SATA drive hates my VIA Chipset.... well more so because of the Driver XP has for it :-s

210967 2004-01-29 22:03:00 Tmrafi, I installed the via hyperion drivers and rebooted and they worked fine, and then I tried the last link and installed them, and on reboot the computer would take a phenomenal time to load windows, got stuck at the splash screen and eventually never loaded.

I had to revert my computer back to 'last known good configuration' at least 3 times while I tested which of the installs was causing the problem. So I can get the hyperion driver installed ok, but the other one kills the machine? Any ideas?

210968 2004-01-29 23:29:00 Has anyone experienced a hard drive in PIO mode??? Its equivalent to a cd-rom drive transferring at 1 - 2x speed. PoWa (203)
