211006 2004-01-29 10:26:00 are they virus free?

most antivirus programs won't work if you have a virus running in the system.

211007 2004-01-29 10:38:00 Yes I've had a lot of probs with Norton on this friend's comp, when they come back from Ozzie I'll suggest they dump it and I'll stick in Zonealarm and AVG and do the rest of the stuff manually.

Norton is for ppl who don't want to know anything about comps and get a mate to fix it up when Norton bungs up.

IMHO

211008 2004-01-30 07:31:00 so am I just about alone in having probs with norton install/uninstall ? drcspy (146)
211009 2004-01-30 07:45:00 I've been in the game for 10 odd years now & have come to love Nortons products.
I make a good living from repairing systems infected by Norton products.
It's damn near worse than some of the viruses it's supposed to be protecting against!
It integrates itself that far into a system it's almost impossible to get rid of & sometimes the only option is to format the whole system just to be able to repair/reinstall Nortons.
Not that I reinstall it very often, usually change to a another product.
I have had some success with a 3rd party norton removal app I found.
Which speaks volumes for Symantecs programmers, they can't even write an effective uninstaller that will remove their own product.

While on this vein, since the introduction of XP, my workload has doubled.
Hardly a day goes by where I don't get a call about an XP system playing up. I love it!!
Don't get me wrong, I love XP & use it myself, best OS produced to date but as for owning a computer being easier for joe average, cobblers!!

211010 2004-01-30 10:58:00 Seems like 45South has been imbibing the product he advertises.
Follow instructions by disabling all the running programs from the taskbar before either installing or uninstalling Norton (and most other programs also require this).
My current computer came with System Works 2002 installed, and I had no problem in uninstalling this and replacing it with SW2003.
As for AVG anti-virus, see reviews in February Netguide - AVG is rubbished as "it doesn't work well" and only gets two stars (because it's free). Stick to Norton or McAfee is my advice.

211011 2004-01-30 11:09:00 the trouble with all this is everyone has different experences with different products.

the problem i have with nortons is it tends to break every 6-12 months requireing reinstall. unfortunatly the updateing is huge as i don't think you can download an updated ver like avg does.

i hate mcafee products simply cause most either don't work, crash out pc's and are a nightmare to get rid of. just had one today, even with the latest updates it still missed an older virus.

Umm, not quite sure what you mean by that, but just to clarify what I meant:
If you uninstall a Nortons product it leaves behind heaps of folders, files, reg entries etc. Do a search for symantec, norton, nav etc after uninstalling & you will find screeds of junk.
Normally an uninstall/reinstall of a product or game that is corrupted will fix the problem & you can go on your merry way, not so with Nortons.
Uninstall, clean out everything norton related you can find, reinstall & the problem probably won't be fixed. That's why there are 3rd party cleaners being written for that purpose.
Not good for a product one has paid good money for.

er....no. not a lot of programs uninstall themselves completly. sometimes its a "feature" to leave bits behind. eg leave settigs behind so if you reinstall you get it back the way it was setup. very handy. unfortunatly if those settings is what caused the fault then you often get the fault back as well. thats why reg cleaners come in so handy.

nortons does intergrate highly which is a pain tho i havn't had any trouble uninstalling it. how hard it would be to manually uninstall due to a virus killing it, i don't know.

what really annoys me is that nortons 2003/2004 requires IE to be installed :( tho its not really such a problem in that most pc's have IE and you need IE installed for other things.

refer to my line re "poor programing skills"
or explain to me what "uninstall" means

I'm fully aware some apps do not fully uninstall themselves, which basically equates to spyware
