1355319 2013-10-07 03:55:00 Ha, I said that would happen when MSSE 1st came out.
MS have a lousy record when it comes to AV programs, MS have tried and abandoned several AV programs over the years. Look at past failures.
They arnt the worst however , that medal goes to a product that I was forced to sell to customers a few years back (company Policy where I worked)

I'd like to see a link to that actual interview (internet BS ?) & see a confirmation on their website , its the exact opposite of what they were saying not too long ago

Microsoft never said or even implied that their AV product wasn't a good choice to protect customers. What they said was they've stopped wasting their time on gaming AV test results (which don't test real world threats accurately) and are instead focussed on researching threats that actually impact customers. And also sharing that info with all the industry antimalware partners so as to raise the protection bar for all Microsoft customers.

protection performance and capabilities are documented here www.microsoft.com

1355321 2013-10-08 02:58:00 Traditional AV software is by nature always behind the virus writers, you need software that works on whitelisting, default block everything unless it's known to be good. Agent_24 (57)
1355322 2013-10-10 05:19:00 So which free AV does the forum suggest to use alongside MSSE? PJ Poppa John (284)
1355323 2013-10-10 05:22:00 Probably get Eset NOD32 but if you have that you might as well ditch MSSE anyway. Agent_24 (57)
1355324 2013-10-10 07:03:00 So which free AV does the forum suggest to use alongside MSSE? PJ Personally I wouldn't get any of them.

From day to day work, the majority of computers I see that are infected usually have one of the Free AV's installed, and infections have destroyed them.

For the Paid AV's the worst ones I've seen loaded with infections have been Trend Micro or McAfee. :2cents:

Reminds me of that Symantec story you recently shared ;)

PJ, I'm with Agent_24 and wainuitech, although "free" sounds nice, I personally wouldn't run anything except NOD32. It's one of the few things I'll gladly pay for.

1355326 2013-10-10 19:20:00 Agree with the above, NOD32 is the go-to AV in my opinion, and has been for years. There's always fluctuation over which is "the best" at any point in time,b ut NOD32 is the only one that's been there or thereabouts consistently imo. MSSE is still my preference if I absolutely must go with a freebie, though. It is less resource hog than the likes of AVG, and just as good at picking stuff up (if not better), and is less obtrusive too. inphinity (7274)
1355327 2013-10-10 19:49:00 Avast will be good enough for most people. I do a custom install & turn off all the options except the Basic AV scanner

If you do something stupid, no AV in the world will help you.
Virus's are being written at about 20 per day, no AV can keep up as they have to wait for
the virus to be known before the can write the sig to detect them.

Ive seen virus's / malware that get past all AV programs, including Nod.
Many infections are self inflicted, you cant protect users from stupidity: clicking on popups, going to dodgy websites, downloading infected hacks, keygens & cracks, opening joke/dodgy emails & clicking on dodgy links in emails .
Thats why some never get active infections on the PC, while others have never ending issues.

Nod AV "WEB" scanner seems to be the most unobtrisive , compared to the Browser plugins etc that other AV products use . These browser AV plugins can be a real pain in the but.
