1354981 2013-10-03 22:34:00 This ASUS K51AC arrived here taking 10 min to start the win 7 boot . Now it won't load windows at all . Can't get into BIOS with F2 or Del key .

A fan is going and it gives two small beeps at power on and it has a sniff at the DVD drive but nothing happens after that .

When it was going I did a chkdsk and it looked fine . Was going to memtest it but can't now get it going to do so .

Tried removing the battery earlier but no difference . Power supply measures 19 . 6V with no load .

Any great ideas?? Don't really want to get into its innards!

1354982 2013-10-03 22:45:00 Hardware fault, could be RAM, power pack, HD , motherboard/internal componentry

Anything on the display? Any LEDs still on/red or flashing

Leave the Batt out & try & start it. Then try & start it with the Batt & wiothout the power pack
Try removing the HD, put in any bootable CD & try & run off that for a test
Try another power pack

Is it still under warranty ?
Should still be covered by the CGA at least.

1354983 2013-10-04 00:58:00 Thanks for reply. Tried most of those things. But, the good news, is that it is going fine now!! I really don't know what I have done to 'fix' it. It did start itself after I removed power and battery and held the power sw down for a couple of minutes. So I got the data off and checked date and time. The time was over an hour behind (so, not just DST error). After saving the time I also noticed the date was for last month so fixed that. Funny, as I thought I had seen it at 4 Oct just before?? Dunno. Also heaved a lot of startups.

Checked RAM and it is OK. Chkdsk ran earlier and files are OK.

Anyway, it is doing exactly what it should do now. For how long? Another dunno!

Cheers.

1354985 2013-10-04 08:43:00 Could also be a failing HDD causing slowness. chkdsk wont always pick up bad sectors.

Had that a couple of times last week, chkdsk came back clean, but ran HDD Regenerator ( not to try and fix, but to check drive) and low and behold, ding ding ding -- bad sectors in the W7 hidden partitions, or in one case a recovery partition.

1354986 2013-10-04 20:32:00 Yes, wondered about the cmos battery but didn't want to learn how to dismantle the laptop to find out!! Hate hardware problems on laptops!

Could be a possibility, WT. Will wait to see whether it comes back!

Thanks, guys.
