| 1333181 | 2013-03-18 03:36:00 | HERE (nz.news.yahoo.com) Now I might be showing my age here a bit ... but I can remember going to the school dental nurse and getting a plastic box used for drill tips, complete with a little drop of mercury in it to play with afterwards (if I was a good boy and didn't bite her finger or swear at her ...:D) Could someone please tell me how 1 broken mercury thermometer can poison 4 people ... or is this just sensationalist reporting yet again ? ... it's not as though there was a gallon of mercury and they all downed a pint each ... :groan: |

No trouble, give the victims a fluoro jacket, a set of photocopied notes, put up 5 KM of warning tape, show a video and immunity for all is assured. |

Where I worked it was used in high current switching devices where it was in a glass container that was tilted by a Relay so the Mercury bridged the contacts. Unfortunately, sometimes the glass container succumb to the heat and or flash and we had Mercury everywhere, so we used to sweep it up and put it in bottles. Probably a tablespoon full in each explosion. We also used to rub it on half-pennies and turn them into shillings. ;) And, Im also very fond of smoked Marko and Marlin if you don't feel you can eat it. :) |

| 1333187 | 2013-03-18 05:36:00 | We also used to rub it on half-pennies and turn them into shillings. ;) When I was a 10 year-old at Intermediate School we had a science class where we were given some pennies and blobs of mercury to rub on them with our fingers. Plenty of mercury ended up on the floor too; I can still remember trying to get some out of the crack between boards. No such thing as mercury poisoning in those days, and we were at it again at Grammar School. No apparent harm done, but I guess I'll never know! Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 1333188 | 2013-03-18 06:08:00 | I still have a few toys made of mercury, old ones from the 70's/80's and I remember heading home on the train from school once and I decided to break open a tilt switch which had mercury in it. At the time I had a crazy phone from china that had a 3'' resistive touch screen, the edge of the screen was raised up 3mm so we put the mercury in there, drew on a rough obstacle track and thought we were hot sh*t with our "stunning 3D graphics and massively realistic physics" :D Also remember spilling a vial of merc on the floor, panicking (because I would be dead if the family found out) and trying unsuccesfully to get it back into the bottle. Well done me. I dunno how I got away with it but I never got called out for it! |

| 1333189 | 2013-03-18 06:43:00 | 6th Form at Boarding School, I was appointed to be the Monitor for the science lab, and the Custodian of The Key. Heady titles, indeed. I would dispense small amounts of needed things (like mercury) for an appropriate fee based upon on the trading commodities of cigarettes and pies. One "artist" had a constant need for silver nitrate which he would use to "tattoo" his clientele. Why I was the monitor, I have no idea. No one in the sixth or upper sixth even took science. | WalOne (4202) | ||
| 1333190 | 2013-03-18 07:51:00 | I still have about 200ml of Mercurochrome antiseptic liquid in a bottle. About one of the best solutions to put on a small cut or abrasion as it dries it out and promotes healing also stops the stinging. Was taken of the market years ago because of the mercury content. :) |
