1333112 2013-03-17 10:44:00 That's really unfortunate.

Really really unfortunate. :(

One would imagine that cycling on a rural road - compared to main road - would reduce the likelihood of encountering trucks and whatnot.

1333113 2013-03-17 18:08:00 The Herald reports that they were single file and there were cyclists behind the woman that got hit so it's not a case of the truck hitting the 1st one it came upon. She wobbled slightly as she looked back at the truck and that was enough to get hit. PaulD (232)
1333114 2013-03-17 19:58:00 We are now seeing a lot of tourists that are travelling the country by bicycle. The roads need to be designed so that cyclists can travel our roads in safety. Between Invercargill and Gore they have a tar sealed safety margin where cyclists can safely cycle outside the lane used by motor traffic. It works fine as long as cyclists travel in single file and not two abreast. Bobh (5192)
1333115 2013-03-18 02:02:00 Cyclists know the risks when they cycle on the main road, there will always be casualties when an unprotected human is 1 metre away from a heavy mass doing 62 mph prefect (6291)
1333116 2013-03-18 02:09:00 Which is why I advocate spending nothing on new roads unless they have a separate cycle lane and no more roadbuilding as we need more cycle lanes with a barrier between the road and the cycle lane gary67 (56)
1333117 2013-03-18 03:42:00 By way of observation, I find that an awful lot of Cyclists have a death wish.

They can usually be identified by their Flash Lycra clothing and a $2000+ cycle.

They seem to think that once they have all this attire fitted they are bomb proof and can do what they like on the roads. Some will even go to extreme lengths to enforce what they see as their rights and some have paid the ultimate price for doing so.

A while ago now I attended a wedding in Auckland and on the Sunday morning thought I’d take a look at the waterfront around to Mission Bay. Well, I’ve never seen so many wanting to decorate the bonnet of my car. It was either the same day or a week later I noted a small article in one of the papers reporting the demise of one of them.

Frankly, I like a sign I saw in Aus which read: “Your Safety is our Concern but Your Responsibility!”

Sort of sums it up the way I see it. ;)

1333118 2013-03-18 03:51:00 Cyclists must be fitted with suitable safety equipment to enable them to play in the rather dangerous machinery operating areas they wish to frequent. Until a cyclist can demonstrate that no vehicles or even cyclists are harmed after being propelled at 100 KMH into a stream of traffic, they should be restricted to school playgrounds between 2 and 4 am. That should cut the toll a bit. R2x1 (4628)
