1332946 2013-03-16 03:52:00 Just had a "customer" (if you can call it that in my tiny scale repairs operation) who had a Macbook pro that wouldn't take CD's, they just got jammed halfway in. Turned out to be a popsicle stick wedged in it. My initial thought when I saw the stick slide past the clear viewing window was "oh crap, that popsicle stick has popped out, how the f*@$ am I going to get it back into position" :p Kinda sat there for a minute pondering my own stupidity. Good thing was the stick hadn't done any damage and the drive still worked.

Not really "strange" (quite common for those slot loading drives to get things in them, especially SD cards in the iMac ones) but in my limited time that's the only real abnormality. I know some of you long timers will have some good yarns, so what's the weirdest problem/solution you dealt with?

1332947 2013-03-16 04:07:00 Original CRT iMac with slot loading cd drive. Wouldn't except any discs. Pulled it apart, managed to extract 3 discs from it. Printer that kept on jamming paper, 1 pen a lighter and a packet of zigzags plod (107)
1332948 2013-03-16 05:59:00 An old computer of mine had Windows 2000 clean-installed on it, and dual-booted with XP. Windows 2000's audio drivers caused all audio to play an octave higher, except audio coming from the Line In port :stare:

The problem was easily fixed by updating the driver, but I didn't want to

1332949 2013-03-16 06:15:00 I was looking at a friends PC that had nasties on board, electronically and physically. I decided to clean the dust out of the case and then spent the next few weeks flea bombing the house trying to get rid of the ********s.

Memo to self: Blow dust out of PCs OUTSIDE next time.

1332951 2013-03-16 08:37:00 Not so much weird, but stupid:

Few years back person called up saying the Computer is F***ed (exacted wording) so I asked what's it doing or not doing -- well press power button and it wont *******Turn on.

OK - just to make sure before I drive 45 minutes to your place - is it plugged in and turned on at the wall/power box and PC --- Do you think I'm a F***en Idiot -- of course it is. OK OK only asking.

Hop in car, drive to place -- See wont go -- Pulled the PC out from under the desk - Grrrrrrrrrrrrr Shaking head :groan: not saying anything go out to the car get a new power lead, plug it in to PC, then mulltibox, what ya know it goes :clap

What did you do he asked ? -- Remember me asking was it plugged in and turned on - and your reply -- Yes he says, well there was no power cord. OH you mean the black one we took out last night to power up my sons PC -- Errrr Yeah, and yours wouldn't go now why ? - OHHHHHHHHH :o guess I am a F***ken Idiot -- I didn't reply ;)

Mind you did spend the next hour cleaning up two PC's anyway. :)

1332952 2013-03-16 08:38:00 Travelling north after work one night, put a cd in the player, finished that one and the next one wouldn't read.
waited till daylight and the player would accept a new cd, had a scratch of the head, looked around and found the non-playing cd had been put in
a small gap between the player and the surrounds, duh.

1332953 2013-03-16 09:08:00 That reminds me of one late last year, I was at the persons place anyway - she asked me how easy iMAC all in Ones were to take apart to get to the optical drive - I asked why ?

The darling young daughter had seen mummy and daddy putting in CD/DVD's into the reasonably new looking iMAC -- apparently she thought that's where you can put in Flash Memory Cards for the camera as well - of course it was well and truly stuck, it had been pushed in so you would have to strip it to get it out.

Haven't done the optical myself, but done a hard drive upgrade.

1332955 2013-03-16 09:22:00 Thanks Plod -- Didn't want to take it apart, it looked reasonable new, it was less than 4 months old at least. Knowing Apple it would have blown the warranty. wainuitech (129)
