1333093 2013-03-18 00:31:00 I took a walk through as much of the Red Zone in Christchurch as I could with my dog about 4 days ago.

Took about 2 hours, we walked from Moorhouse Avenue up Madras St to Gloucester Street and then down to the library and back down following the Avon River closely until we got back to the remains of the train station.

It is now possible to overview most of the formerly closed areas.

Absolutely trashed.

The cardboard cathedral looks like a large A frame from the 70's, a big joke.

Was that because all you wanted to see, or was it because that was what you were allowed to see?

1333095 2013-03-18 06:58:00 A number of streets have parts still closed because of dangerous buildings, I guess, and part of the Square is still inaccessible but mostly you can look down and see the broken rubble that remains of buildings still half standing.

Whereas for most of the last two years a large part of the area bounded by the one-way street system was not able to be seen except from a distance.

Now one can walk into the Square and look at the remains of the Cathedral from a number of angles from a number of different viewpoints caused by the number of buildings that once upon a time would have obscured all of the Square but now they are gone and only empty space.

Some of these spaces are converted into car parks some of which which are being charged for?????!!!!!!! mostly around the Cashel Street/Lichfield Street area.

The place is devastated, a huge mess, trashed.

1333097 2013-03-18 12:04:00 What this made me think of after the earthquake was being invaded by an enemy army, even though it was obvious that there were police, army and workers walking freely through the 'Red Zone' the ordinary citizens were not allowed in, "for their own safety".

It was a major power tripping exercise indulged in by the "authorities" and adult responsible business people and others were treated like children.

After all everyone went through the experience of the earthquakes and were hardened/toughened by the experience realizing that you have to take risks in life and not be wrapped up in cotton wool by "kindly" corporations ie ACC/CERA etc looking after your best interests according to them.

You must have seen on tv where businessmen trying to get into their premises to regain essential apparatus were stopped and wrestled to the ground.

Obviously you couldn't have the public at large wandering around with the risks of a severe after-shock bringing parts of a damaged building down onto them, also of course, looting would be a problem.

But in the incident shown on tv distraught business people needed to get their property before buildings were demolished and could see authorized personnel moving through the ravaged streets freely but they were not allowed in to their frustration!

Places that we knew well were now inaccessible and some still remain so. I have no interest in returning to the city centre, I think it should just be made into a big park with recreational areas and entertainment centres, forget business, what with the internet and how the Malls have affected shopping habits the CBD has lost it's meaning here.

Lastly, forgot to say that it reminded me of the heavy handed tactics used at Pike River by the powers that be.
