211778 2004-01-31 06:50:00 Hi guys... now that I have everyone's attention with my post's title :)

I want to jump over to Linux but in the past I've been reluctant to take those 1st steps... I guess I hated it cos it felt like I knew nothing about my computer. Well I have it up and running Red Hat Linux 9 (kernel 2.4) it's the original that came with the ISO's I downloaded.

PC specs:

Asus P4P8X mobo
Celeron 2.4Ghz (running at 2.65Ghz)
1GB DDR400 ram (dual channel)
Asus GeForce FX 5200 display card (128MB)
Sound Blaster Live!
80GB Seagate Barracuda HDD (Windows 2K Pro installed)
10GB IBM HDD (Red Hat Linux 9 installed)
Samsung CDRW drive
Samsung DVD Rom

Ok I have a few problems so hopefully someone out there can help.

1) I can't load my Windows 2000 Pro from the GRUB loader, when I select
it the following message appears...

"Booting Windows 2000 Professional
rootverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1"

nothing happens after that. What I have to do now is go into the BIOS and make the HDD with Windows on it the 1st boot drive. It's not a major problem but I would like not to have to do that all the time.

2) I can't load the drivers for my NIC (3Com 2000 gigabit card) I have the
drivers on my mobo CD, followed the instructions but nothing works.

It says "type make load to load the driver" but then it says bad
command... am I doing something wrong. I also tried
" insmod 3c2000.o but that didn't help either.

3) I need drivers for my GeForce FX 5200 ( yeah I know, what the hell
was I thinking buying that bag of bolts for). Looked at the nVidia
instructions to load them and then realised I wasn't a rocket
scientist ... SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!!!

4) I'm also looking for the Linux drivers (if any) for my Soundblaster Live!
soundcard anyone have them... do they exist.

Well that concludes my contribution to the Linux community, you been a great crowd thank you very much... I'll be here all week hehehehehe :)

cheers

They are included with redhat. The installer should have detected it and set it up for you so double check the volume isn't just muted.

Otherwise rerun the soundcard config program, sndconfig IIRC.

Hehe, Got my attention.... ;-)

Here's a tip:
Find a newer Distro if possible
There has been Many enhancements since Redhat 9. Fedora Core 1 would be best... I would suggest Ark Linux, but its still not a Final Release, and requires you to manually stop the cups printing daemon.

Just two things I should probably say:
Most Linux users are a zealous bunch, everybody has their own way of doing things, and everything can be done in more than one way... Pick what works best for you :-)
Secondly, dont sweat it if all the names seem really odd... Grub for a name for a bootloader?! It'll be second nature after a while ;-)

That's a nice spec'd PC... Redhat should be pretty speedy!

It appears you have two HDD"s installed.
What is the layout on your motherboard, eg:
Primary Master = 80GB HDD
Primary Slave = 10GB HDD
Secondary Master = DVD-Rom
Secondary Slave = CD-R/W
Basically, Grub is looking for hd1 which is the "(hd1" part, and partition 1 which is the ",0)" part.
Grub works by taking the first HDD and making it hd0. This is regardless of where it is, be it Primary Slave or Master.. Whatever, its just the First HDD...
If you're booting Win2K, you likely want it to be:
rootnoverify (hd0,0)

Give that a try :-)

That can be a pain... I just hit F8 while it's POST'ing and I can select boot Device :-D

using "make" requires devel tools to be installed. They're not big, but it might pay to install them.
Run redhat-config-packages to install them :-) You'll need your Install CD's.

I'll make another post in a few mins when I've changed browser.. Otherwise, look up a post that myself and Jen made a while back helping somebody install them. Its _not_ too hard with step-by-step instructions :-)

as root, type:
modprobe emu10k1
or, as bmason mentioned, run:
sndconfig
That should get your sound sorted (Although it picked mine up fine?).

Dont worry about it... Ive asked many-a-question here about Linux.
After using linux for around a year now, I am proud to say its been my only OS for the past 5 months...
YMMV

Good luck

211782 2004-01-31 08:11:00 Thanks for the advice Chill, it's a lot of reading but it seems pretty simple to follow.

Ok I have the sound working now, that's a bonus.

As far as GRUB's concerned these are how the drives are set out.

10GB is primary master
80GB is primary slave

CDRW is secondary master
DVD is secondary slave

What do I need to change?

cheers
chiefnz

PS: how do I play Mp3's Redhat 9 doesn't appear to support mp3?

211783 2004-01-31 08:22:00 Sorry Chill forgot to ask this....

is there any way I can change that rootverify bit or am I gonna have to re-install?

cheers

You just need to install the plugin for XMMS. You can find the RPM here (www.gurulabs.com) - xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.i386.rpm. That is the Red Hat 9 version, don't worry about the SRPM. Just install the RPM and fire up XMMS again and this time it will play mp3's with no problems.

Oops - forgot to mention that in my instructions for installing the nvidia driver, I had a brain-fade and proceded to make a command instruction typo repeatly :8}. I did make a later post to correct that mistake but it is much further down the page on that thread.

Anyway, basically every teleinit should actually read telinit without the extra e I was fond of.

Installing the drivers is pretty straight forward and the editing of the XF86Config file afterwards, and the whole procedure is not as bad as it looks :)

211786 2004-01-31 09:28:00 Ok... I tried loading the drivers for the NIC again, thanks Chill the devel packages were installed and I got a bit further this time around only problem now is... it won't load insmod 3c2000.o from the "make load" command or on it's own... I get an error message saying "command not found"

Anyone have any ideas?

cheers

211787 2004-01-31 09:52:00 Try the following to edit the Grub settings:
hit Alt + F2
type:
xterm
now, type:
su -
[enter your root password]
Then type in:
kedit
Or if you only installed gnome, type:
gedit
Either should work

Now that you have a text editor open with Root access to the system (root = admin in Linux), just edit:
/etc/grub.conf
Change it, save it, and reboot :-)

it should say:
rootnoverify (hd0,0)

Lemme know how you get on :-)
