211668 2004-01-31 00:08:00 I just did a 'Common Ports' test on grc.com and found that my ports 21 & 80 were open.

How do I close them?

I use XP Pro, NIS 2003 Pro. I also have Apache installed for local site testing.

211669 2004-01-31 00:18:00 apache is the porblem.

tell apache to only run on the local network card

other solution is to turn on XP firewall

211670 2004-01-31 04:51:00 Port 21 is FTP which is more of a problem. Depending on how its setup it could be allowing anyone access to your files. bmason (508)
211671 2004-01-31 23:00:00 Turning on the XP firewall did not help. I am using NIS and even when I create a rule in that to block ports 21 & 80 it doesn't work.

How can I tell apache to only run on local network card? I don't even have a network card (well I have a firewire card).

I am using an ADSL router to access the internet.

So the ports aren't open on your PC, they are open on the router.

Enter your router config and make the changes there.

211673 2004-02-01 12:00:00 Hmm, I suspect you are right. I have done a clean install of my OS and still the ports are open.

Now, how do I configure my ADSL modem?

211674 2004-02-01 12:40:00 Ahh done it!

In my routers config I disabled FTP server and restricted http access to LAN.

I'm stealth on all ports now!

Thanks!

211675 2004-02-01 19:29:00 I had the same problem on port 1024 - how do I close that/find out what had it open?

211676 2004-02-01 22:30:00 Hmmm, that's strange. When I made those changes to my router and rebooted it - it was stealth,.. but if I repeat the ports probe straight away,.. it fails on port 80 again??? (plus most of the others aren't stealth anymore - just closed.)

Tony - What firewall do you use?

211677 2004-02-01 22:44:00 I use ZoneAlarm Pro - which is what makes it all a bit strange, because if I set the internet zone to high security, it should block everything. tbacon_nz (865)
