2004-01-31 02:10:00 | Have a look at Apache. It's frre and well written. At a guess, you'll find all about it at www.apache.org/ | Graham L (2) | |

2004-02-01 08:25:00 | You got a few options available, ranging from free to not-so free. Possibly the best method would be to use an old computer and run Apache on it with ApacheASP and MySQL (entailing installing Linux on the computer). If you've got XP Home, all is not lost - there is some sort of "hack" (I think it was editing the text in a file) that allows IIS to be installed on XP Home, except from what I remember, it might've only worked on a version that was pre-SP1, and once done, SP1 wouldn't install. The information is probably available via a bit of Googling, and it's free of course. You could download PWS (Personal Web Server), which comes from the days of early NT Server. It should run on XP Home, but you can use it on ME, 98, & 95 (probably 2000 too) to host ASP pages instead of buying NT Server. This method is free also (assuming you have a spare copy of Windows that you'd use as a server). PWS can be downloaded from Microsoft's website, do a search there. Xitami (www.xitami.com) also offers support for ASP via a commercial plugin. Xitami has a free version, and a Pro version (an old version of Xitami Pro is also offered for free, the main benefit of it over the free edition is SSL support for the HTTPS protocol). Quite a nice webserver here. Or, you could buy Windows 2000 Server (or something like that), bearing in mind licencing costs. Also, XP Home or Pro will only allow up to 10 connections from remote devices ("devices" being other computers, handhelds, phones, any other device that can connect to a service on your computer I think - more detailed description in the EULA), so you've automatically got a limit there, and 2000 would have a similar one (which would expand with licences).

2004-02-01 08:36:00 | ok will give PWS a go... I aint gonna do any "hacks" coz i am basically still under warranty with laptop so if hack anything then voids it i'm sure...and it is illegal i guess....yeah i've read about it thou... just did a microsft.com search for the personal web server...it comes in a "option pack" should i download that or am i required to have something else b4 downloading? optionpack (www.microsoft.com) I have a copy of Win98 here somewhere...and a friend is offering me his Prowinxp cd as hes "downgrading" to home...if that would do anything as i know pro has IIS.....and has asp support... Cheers

2004-02-01 08:58:00 | Yeah, it's the NT4.0 Option Pack, you'd want the one for Windows 95 (www.microsoft.com). It runs on 98 and ME because I used to use them; now I use IIS on XP Pro (which I like better due to increased options and flexibility). Just bear in mind that it (XP) will only allow a maximum of 10 client connections (it's not meant to be used as a server). You could always order a trial of Windows 2003 Server from www.microsoft.com/nz; it's free and although I don't like the fact that they keep your details for their own purposes, the two trials I've got last for 360 days and can be installed on 10 computers (interpret that how you like, but I'd say you could potentially use it for 3600 days). The package they send you should include both the Standard and Enterprise versions, and of course, you'll be running IIS 6 (latest version), and can use IIS 6 tools to self-certify your web server (a free SSL certificate, although it would be up to end-users whether they trust it or not).

2004-02-01 09:05:00 | Ok, its only gonna be a temporary server for me and a few friends while i build a website and have them test it out...and then i find a host with asp support etcetc...thats later on.. will this win95 pack work on xp? meaning would i have to adjust settings by right click and open in 95 or something if u know what i mean? and i might consider trialing out this server (ordering from ms) as since its only a tempoary server while website being built...

2004-02-01 09:17:00 | also are u 100% certian that this webserver evaluation is free to order/deliver right to my frontdoor/letterbox? | csinclair83 (200) | |
2004-02-01 09:27:00 | Well there used to be a site at www.microsoft.com/nz/evaluation (www.microsoft.com), but it appears to have gone (or else it used some other similar word, but /nz/trial doesn't exist either, nor does /nz/eval...). Your best bet looks to be here (www.microsoft.com), although that does say "free in the US". You could always download it, but it looks like they've changed quite a bit in the evaluation kit since I ordered two of them (I worked around their "one only for each address" policy ;)), such as a reduced trial period (180 days) and only offering it in Enterprise edition. AFAIK the Enterprise version just has support for higher-end hardware, and as such requires a bit more in terms of system specifications, I think.

2004-02-01 09:32:00 | And in reply to your other questions, you should be able to run the NT4 Option Pack normally in XP (remember to install it as the administrator), but if something fails I'd try it in compatibility for Windows 98/ME before 95. If Windows Server 2003 is too much hassle to get, just try the NT4 Option Pack, because it's smaller (~25MB) and easier to work with on a short-term basis.
