| 211330 | 2004-01-30 08:56:00 | My friend has a old second hand PC. Since he got it it has been giving HDD full messages. He runs WIN98. A few days ago some kids got at it. It will not boot up. I have via DOS removed his MY DOCUMENTS folder to a floppy. A few weeks ago i went into his MY COMPUTER and found the 2GB drive partitioned into C 1.5GB and D 0.5GB. D has WIN 98 as restore files. Also D had MY DOCUMENTS and WIN 98 working files. With no spare room. C had his game files. C was 85% empty. I have given him my old WIN 98 CD, (My old PCs power supply burnt out so i have a new PC) I decided to reinstall WIN 98 from my CD and also to get rid of the partitions. I formatted C thinking it would remove the partition D, it did not. I also then formatted D. I am now left with C and D each with files i transfered from the boot floopy. How do i get rid of the Partition? I hope i do not need special software. As the PC is the same as my old PC, PC Direct, i was going to use the PC Direct support disk. But my mates PC came without any WIN 98 CDs, but did come with a WIN 95 CD which we did not want to use. The BIOS superviser passsword was set, and set to boot from D, we had to disconnect the back up battery this morning to reset to boot from A (floppy). One more thing, after the WIN 98 floppy boot disk does its thing, it leaves the DOS prompt to Z:. Is this right? |

| 211334 | 2004-02-01 03:19:00 | Thanks for the answers, i have used FDISK on the PC and got an error message. My mate has got epilepsy (I have acute depression) and all he is able to do is insert CD games and play. I was trying to make it easy for him as he wants to learn, and does not need restore files and a second partition on the hard drive. (Now i have given him my old WIN 98 disks.) I was going as second choice to put everything into C: leaving D: empty for now. I was unable to find out who set up his computer as it was bought and given to him by his family. I found empty "MY Documents" and "My Programs" folders on C: along with some games my mate installed. The "My Programs" folder on D: which he was using had links to Microsoft Office, but Office was not on the drive. Lots of other muck not working. The CD drive was a slave to the HDD. I would have had them separate. His family bought it as a rebuilt unit, supposedly as newly set up/installed. I found all the screws to the case sealed with hot melt glue. C: with 1.5GB is plenty for the time being. I will be back at his place tomorrow. As well as the kids touching his PC while he was asleep, he had a break in a few days ago and lost all his music CDs That was all that was taken, i would say by one of his so called mates. I need to change his locks as he loaned his keys out once. NB my only DOS experience is Commodore Amiga DOS on a non hard disk model up to 1997 when i got my first PC. After that i just read up on it for my PC. I miss programing in BASIC which i learnt on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48kB. A MS Word document is more than 48K. |

| 211335 | 2004-02-01 04:02:00 | Thanks mate, I printed it out plus then i found a link to "problems with deleting partitions" In FDISK i did not see option 3 "Deleteing partitions" i do not think it was there but i was following instructions from a book to build a PC and formating and installing for the first time. I did notice in FDISk (Or somewhere) that C: was FAT32 and there was nothing for D: meaning a non-DOS partitiion? which the document i down loaded says is trouble, but i can not understand why i found WIN files on a non-DOS drive?. |
