2004-02-06 19:17:00 | WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO Coming to yo live from my Red Hat Linux setup hehehehehe. Dam it's good when you finally get something right after exhausting all possibilities. Well I bought a DSE 100Mbps LAN card and she runs like a charm. Kudzu picked up the new hardware in a snap aked me a few basic questions, gateways address etc and she was away. Finally I can stay on Linux and surf the net. Now for my nVidia drivers. Thanks to Chill Jen C and all the rest of the F1'ers who assisted me in the strenuous time of OS management (or is it replacement lol) No doubt in a few days, hours, minutes I will have more questions. so keep those Liniux manuals handy folks, I'ma gonna need it. cheers chiefnz

2004-02-06 19:48:00 | Well told you I'd be back in a few minutes lol :) I can't seem to get the system down to runlevel 3. When I type "telinit 3" as root, nothing happens, it gives me a bash error. Anyone got any ideas cheers chiefnz

2004-02-07 02:50:00 | I think it's in /sbin ... check with locate telinit. So e.g., "/sbin/telinit 3" should work. (Even "init 3" should work, becsue telinit is just a link to init). But ... it ought to work. I suspect a PATH problem. If you are su-ing to root, always do "su -". The " -" makes it use the standard root environment, instead of the user environment. Ordinary users don't use "system" type commands, so their path does not include the directories which hold them. (I always change the path of my user account to include them. :D)

2004-02-07 07:28:00 | Hey chill yeah I did e-mail you saying I can't make it as I have to work..... again. I just looked at your e-mail address and I think in an earlier post, your address read, Chilling_Silence [at] orcon [dot] new [dot] nz I suppose I should have noticed something fishy, anyways if you don't mind can we take a rain check on that, I do appreciate your offer to help and I will make sure to make use of it in the near future. Now that I'm online I spend quite a bit of time fiddling around, I just needa sort my GeForce card out now and will try the abovementioned suggestions. cheers chiefnz

2004-02-08 02:22:00 | The command you would be looking for is 'init 3'. I had this problem the first time I tried this. Have you tried joining an LUG? There are quite a few around, and all have friendly people in. Sparq
