How many people have had failed upgrades from previous versions of Windows? No OS is perfect.. > Whenever I see a magazine article titled "Linux Ready > for the Desktop", you get a little way into the > article and there will be a bit that says "I had a > little trouble with xyz, but I downloaded and > compiled abc and then it was all fine." Its worked absolutely trouble free for my family's PC? Including Camera which took me hours of pissing around with on Win2K > I don't want > an OS that requires me to know all this stuff up > front. Sounds fair :-) > But the underlying stuff has to work. Yeah.. Its stable... and I think you might be surprised... Look at what's happening to PressF1, with more and more Linux questions popping up. Why? Because there's more and more users :D > I suspect there will be some Linux devotees who would > be quite sad at this state of affairs because it > would mean that there was nothing left for them to > play with and have secret knowledge of, but I think > there will always be stuff that can be done, because > Linux is so customisable and therefore > infinitely malleable. > [/rant] Obviously :-D Same can be said for Windows though! I got bored of fixing it, and knowing a lot of the common problems, so Linux has been my saviour and renewed my interest in computing! Its not ready for the world, but good on those special few that try it and like it :-) </rant2> ;-) |

| 211829 | 2004-02-03 10:31:00 | He is talking about RH8 it is effectively 10 now but the free one is now called Fedora. As far as installs go I have had less trouble installing Linux than Windows. There is another post where someone changed their motherboard and Win2000 spat a dummy whereas Linux just carried on. |

| 211831 | 2004-02-03 10:56:00 | Now Now tbacon_nz under that theory IE and OUtlook must be absolute rubbish going by the number of posts for them. You make it sound like Windows is trouble free. If you don't want to try Linux no one is going to force you to. | mikebartnz (21) | ||
| 211832 | 2004-02-03 15:52:00 | Well I'm back at work and havn't had much time to tinker a bit more with Linux, I will keep reading and Googling in the mean time. I don't really wanna look like a complete idiot when Chill comes around on Sunday. Although mind you I don't mind so much not having the knowledge regarding Linux... I guess it is my so-called final frontier. With what I've read so far on the net and from various F1'ers, I am quite comfortable with the knowledge that one day Linux could become my primary desktop OS. It's amazing how a little curiosity get's you revved up to discover and learn new things. Even if I don't find Linux to be my cup of tea in the end... I cannot place a value on what it has done for my computing enthusiasm. Well enough from me! ;) cheers chiefnz |

| 211833 | 2004-02-03 19:02:00 | The ]:) was meant to indicate mischevious irony - mind you there has to be a bit of irony in the response (I hope!) Of course I'm not saying Windows is trouble-free . I just think that occasionally zealots need to be reminded that their world is not necessarily the perfect answer . I suspect I will try Linux some day - but not just yet . Maybe my reactions to this thread explain why I have been enjoying smack the pingu so much . :D |

Which partitular zealots are you refering to? I see that term all the time refering to devoted Linux users . There are equaly zealotous MS Windows users btw . > I suspect I will try Linux some day - but not just > yet . Jump in the waters fine . Lots of nice folk to help out if you get stuck . No not all Linux users intend to- . neoburn . net/imagef1/files/marrkp2 . jpg-folk" target="_blank">sal . neoburn . net btw . > Maybe my reactions to this thread explain why I have > been enjoying smack the pingu so much . :D (Sarcasim)So you enjoy dishing something you know very little about?(End of sarcasim) |
