211808 2004-02-02 05:39:00 First of all, let me congratulate you on being pro-active and searching google.. I know a lot of people sit on their butts all day and wait for a reply from the people at PressF1 :-)

Be proud, it'll come in handy later on!

Im guessing you downloaded the sources for the Linux kernel?

You could compile your own... Its not _too_ difficult, but a bit daunting at first. You could try:
people.redhat.com
The rpms from there, or run:
up2date
and it'll tell you all the updates for your system.
I'd suggest you check the first website I mentioned and download the rpm's from there :-)

If you've installed the development tools, I'd suggest you download this:
www.xmms.org

Here's a quick run-down on getting it running, and you _will_ have sound after this:
open a console and run the following as root:
rpm -e xmms <<--This removed the current version of xmms
cd /home/username/dir_you_saved_the_file_to/ <<--This gets you into the right folder...
tar xvjf xmms-1.2.9.tar.bz2 <<--This extracts the file contents
cd xmms-1.2.9 <<--Gets you into the xmms source folder
./configure --prefix=/usr <<--Configures xmms, so its ready to be compiled
make <<--Makes xmms
make install <<--Installs xmms

You should have a fully perfect version of xmms compiled on your system, for your system, by your system :-D
Feel free to ignore that part about xmms if you'd rather not learn how to compile apps, but that's all there is to doing it.

Have you used the chkconfig command Jen said to remove kudzu?

Hope this helps, and good on ya for sticking with it, although a newer version of Redhat/Fedora would certainly help....

Cheers

211809 2004-02-02 05:59:00 Thanks for the encouragement Chill, I swear if I get this Linux running I'm taking you and Jen C out for dinner!

As for the xmms.... dam it looks freaky but I will give it a go.

Also... I just came across this forum post. (www.linuxhq.com) It has to do with my 3COM controller, can't make sense of it though, but I am confident I will get it working eventually, others have and despite the fact they have more experience than I do that doesn't mean it's not impossible for me. ;)

211810 2004-02-02 06:12:00 I see you're from Auckland.. If you want, we could always set aside a day, I could come round with some Fedora CD's and we could compile a 2.6 kernel for your system...

Here's the 10/100/1000 drivers that come with the 2.6 kernel:

Alteon AceNIC/3Com 3C985/NetGear GA620 Gigabit support
D-Link DL2000-based Gigabit Ethernet support
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet support
National Semiconduct DP83820 support
Packet Engines Hamachi GNIC-II support
Packet Engines Yellowfin Gigabit-NIC support (EXPERIMENTAL)
Realtek 8169 gigabit ethernet support
SiS190 gigabit ethernet support (EXPERIMENTAL)
Marvell Yukon Chipset / SysKonnect SK-98xx Support
Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5700 Tigon3 support (official broadcom driver)

Doesnt say anything in there about 3com sadly...

Personally... Invest $12 in a PCI 10/100 NIC from DSE... They're dead easy to configure!
If you want me to come round Ive got one you could have if you're on a budget... ;-)

211811 2004-02-02 06:17:00 Hell yeah that sounds good... I do shift work so I have fixed days off, how is Sunday the 8th for you?

Let me know, I'd really appreciate it.

If you can make it then I'll get a NIC from DSE this week some time.

cheers

211812 2004-02-02 06:24:00 Yeah, Sundays fine in the Afternoon, round 2pm?

Email me if you like:

BTW - You've got the Disk-Writer output for xmms as your output, so dont bother downloading.

Simple open xmms
Press Ctrl + P for Preferences
Down the bottom left (under the Audio I/O Plugins tab) is the default output. Change it from Disk-Writer to OSS or Alsa :-)

Cheers

211813 2004-02-02 06:27:00 Cool I'll mail you some time before then and I'll try that xmms thingy you said to.

211814 2004-02-02 06:59:00 Ok tried the compiling thingy but when I get to...

"./configure --prefix=/usr <<--Configures xmms, so its ready to be compiled"

it says bad command and I can't go further, what am I doing wrong, what is the exact command line I should be typing?

cheers

211815 2004-02-02 08:09:00 Alrighty then I managed to figure out what I was doing wrong. The command line I was looking for was...

./configure

this ran great up until it said

"GLIB >=1.2.2 not installed-please install first"

Chill what's the prefix you mention in "/configure --prefix=/usr"

Guess I'll be googling for this GLIB thing and then I'll be back to ask how to install it probably lol :)

cheers

211816 2004-02-02 08:21:00 Im guessing you've already removed the rpm?

To save on time, I'd suggest you run:
redhat-config-packages
Re-install the xmms rpm from your Redhat 8 Disc's

Change the default output from Disk-Writer

We can look at compiling on sunday... Odd that its moaning about glib though... Perhaps the latest xmms wont run on Redhat 8?

211817 2004-02-02 08:41:00 It is interesting that the title of this topic is "Linux - convince me it's worth it". everything I have read so far has only convinced me that it is not (not yet anyway).

I've been teetering on the edge of trying Linux for ages, but every time I get close I come across a thread like this one. Say what you like about Windows (and who doesn't?) :D, at least it generally installs and configures with minimal problems. When I owned my Sanyo-555 in 1984 I would have welcomed challenges like the ones posed here, but these days I just want my PC to work.

The support and knowledge demonstrated in this thread is really great, and shows what a bunch of supportive enthusiasts the Linux community is. But until I can get a copy of Linux, put into a CD-ROM drive and have it install all by itself, it is going to remain just that - an enthusiast's toy.

I'll now sit back and wait for the flames!
