211798 2004-02-01 22:13:00 Ok just spent the last 25 minutes reading the bugzilla report... and I have to say I'm not over joyed to say the least, too many Linux terms I don't understand... some say that the driver on my Asus CD is a hack of an old Syskonnect (SK98xx LAN card), I tried loading that in Linux but it didn't work.

From the bugzilla report one group says it's a problem with "kudzu" whatever the hell that is? Apparently when this "kudzu" is disabled at the boot level the cards run fine (3Com cards that is no reference to my particular card).

So I guess my next question is... how do I disable this "kudzu" thingy they're talking about...

Also how do I make my Windows partitions viewable in Linux.

cheers

211799 2004-02-01 22:50:00 Kudzu is the Red Hat Linux hardware probing tool run at system boot time to determine what hardware has been added or removed from the system.

You should be able to disable it through the Services options. See this page (plug.org.in) for a little info. Otherwise there should be info in the Kudzu manual in Fedora.

See this page (www.redhat.com).

It is worth downloading the Redhat manuals and printing off pages that you require for reference. Redhat manuals are here (www.redhat.com). I am not sure if there are any Fedora manuals like this yet.

211801 2004-02-01 23:23:00 Ok confession time, I don't know if this will make a difference but I have just discovered that I am running Red Hat Linux 8 and not Red Hat Linux 9 as previously stated at the beginning of this post .

Sorry for the inconvenience . . . . Miscrosoft made me this way!!!

SAVE ME PLEASE!!!!

cheers

211802 2004-02-02 00:34:00 Ok just a quick update... so far I have

mounted my windows partition (FAT32) can't mount the primary partition where Win2K is installed cos it's NTFS.. no big deal most of my stuff's in the FAT32 partition anyways.

What I havn't been able to do...

1) Still don't have the NIC working, I've been through a few forums
already but nothing seems to be working at this point. What I am looking
to do now is to install a NIC in one of my free PCI slots and use it in
Linux, when booting into Windows I will just disable it in the hardware
profile.. it's an ugly fix but at least I will be able to run Linux for longer,
without internet access it is quite boring (you must admit)

2) Can't use the nVidia drivers for my FX card because I need internet access, of course this is not possible because of problem no.1 listed above.

Well don't know if anyone has any bright ideas out there, I really don't want to have to get another distro, I've installed this one 3 times already, but if push comes to shove I guess I will have to. Anyone got a spare distro lying around... preferbaly one that supports my 3Com LOM (C950).

211803 2004-02-02 01:19:00 Well have done some more forum searching and it wold appear that the driver which comes with the mobo's CD bundle doesn't actually work at all. However as I previously stated in another post there are people who have used a Syskonnect driver (sk98lin) and it works just fine on the 3C940 LAN controller.... I found this post (www.linuxquestions.org) which says the Syskonnect driver actually works.

Can't really understand all the Linux jargo tho.

211804 2004-02-02 01:29:00 This is the problem with bleeding edge hardware. :_| There seem to be a lot of "challenges" in the gigabit technology. If you are not using the 1000 Mbps a cheap Linux compatible 10/100 PCI card will avoid the problem. And probably work straight off. :D

This is the sort of thing that a different distribution usually doesn't avoid. The problem is making the hardware work --- the software is common to all distributions. (A lot of the problems seem to be in getting the 1000Mbps work without taking all the CPU time servicing interrupts for each packet.)

211805 2004-02-02 02:23:00 After a bit more reading, it is necessary for me to update the kernel for Linux. Ok people newbie here I have no idea how to do that, all I know is my current kernel is 2.4.18-14.

what else do I need to do and where do I get the latest kernel from?

cheers

211806 2004-02-02 04:37:00 Do you know what kernel version will be OK? You can get a RPM for kernel-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl.XXX.rpm from here (download.fedora.redhat.com). They come in athlon, i586 or i686 flavours (the XXX part of the file name). Or do you need a RPM for kernel 2.6?

Did you sort out how to shut down kudzu OK? If not, just open up a Console Window, "su -" (without speechmarks) to root, and enter this:

chkconfig --level 345 kudzu off

Did you want a newer version of your System? - Fedora Core 1 is what Red Hat 10 was to be called until Red Hat made some changes to their business direction.

211807 2004-02-02 05:17:00 Well apparently the kernel that Red Hat 8 ships with (2.4.18-14) doesn't support my 3COM LOM. From what I've been reading I need a kernel from 20 upwards, I dowloaded a 2.6 kernel but I don't know how to upgrade, I've been reading the instructions and I have to say I'm even more confused :(

I tell you what getting Linux to run is not a walk in the park but I want to learn how to use it.

Right now I just really want to get the LAN controller working that way I will spend more time with Linux rather than have to switch to Windows every time I get stuck.

Still can't get MP3's to play even though I installed that XMMS rpm for MP3 support ( see my earlier post above for more details)

Well back to Google for more research.
