| 211730 | 2004-01-31 06:39:00 | Hi, our main computers PSU fan sometimes stops working. Usually we can get it going again if we get a twisty thing and manually spin in it. if the comp is off overnight it will not work when turned on. I think its either 300w/350w or 400 (probably 300w) ATX case (tower) Our old computer that was a desktop (flat) had this problem to. i am wondering how safe it actually is for it not to run. |

| 211732 | 2004-01-31 06:57:00 | It is not at all good for the PSU to run without the fan . It is going to at least kill the PSU, and will possibly cause damage to the rest of your computer . The first signs of it dieing will be when it crashes and becomes hard to start . |

| 211733 | 2004-01-31 07:00:00 | Yeh, nah i dont think it has been crashing . It was on for 5 days 20 hrs yesterday till i gave it a restart . No problems . All it does it do Internet few minor games . It is the internet gateway at the moment . If only my parents let me in to clean the componenets etc with compressed air . But i will suggest to them that we get it seen to . |

| 211734 | 2004-01-31 07:29:00 | Hi Gareth If you need help convincing your parents to take prompt action, quote them this equation: PSU - cooling fan = dead computer + lotsa dollars Take it from me, electronics and excessive heat are not a happy mix. Never mind the crashing, the PSU fan shouldn't be relied upon for CPU cooling anyway. It is very likely that the first sign of trouble will be the last, i.e. a dead PC. Cheers Billy 8-{) :| |

| 211737 | 2004-01-31 08:01:00 | would it be coverd under insurance, cause our first comp was insured for about 3,200 (niiiice) and its still covered (we got it upgraded after i fried mobo(accidentally of course :P)) So this way, i see it as, we get it to die and then we get a new comp. Hehehehehehehhe.. WIll it be covered tho? |

| 211739 | 2004-01-31 08:28:00 | Negligence in failing to maintain adequately your PC will negate your insurance cover, and by posting the issue on PF1 you have made it arguably more dangerous to lodge a false claim. Having said that, a dead PSU is unlikely to be considered an insurance matter unless you can prove EXTERNAL cause. In the event that you lodged a claim for the whole PC, the equipment would be taken by the insurance company for forensic examination to establish the cause of death. That can take several weeks vs coughing a few bucks now for a new fan, or even a hundred or so for a complete new PSU. No-brainer :| Cheers Billy 8-{) :) |
