211956 2004-02-01 00:36:00 I recently purchased a Maxtor 250 GB removable drive to use for backups. Unfortunately Windows XP Pro recognises the drive as a Hard Drive ane not a removable drive (both USB and Firewire). This means my backup software (Backup my PC and Retrospect Backup) doesn’t recognise the drive as a backup device. I can back up to “a file” but not in any automated, unattended method.

Interesting, Microsoft Backup DOES recognise it as a backup device and backs up happily each day, but this software lacks compression and search facilities of the others mentioned.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to force XP to see the drive as removable for example?

211957 2004-02-01 03:48:00 What is the model of the drive? Is it an actual removeable drive, or just an external hard-drive?

Have you tried running XP first and then plugging in the drive while it's running? XP may detect it differently if plugged in while running rather than plugged in while powered-down etc.

I guess it is called an External hard drive. Yes I have tried plugging it in once windows is running - same thing.

211959 2004-02-02 01:20:00 The problem is not with the OS . Shock . Horror . :D

You say that MS's Backup does recognise the drive as a removable device .

The problem is with the other software . Check the sites of the manufacturers of the programmes for any updates . Google with, say, "Maxtor removable Retrospect Backup problems" is always worth a try . If all else fails, send an email to the manufaturers . ;-)
