211928 2004-01-31 22:30:00 I'll be assembling a PC (Pentium 4 system) for a friend of mine.

I understand that P4 cpu comes complete with the cooling fan and 'Thermal Paste' - this paste will melt by itself when the cpu warms up during first few hours of operation. Is this true?

I would really appreciate it if those who have installed P4 cpu could commend on this issue and any other special cautions regarding this matter.

Cheers

211929 2004-01-31 22:44:00 Umm I've installed Celeron's 1.7 & 2.4 Ghz but I havn't seen any themal paste on them, I've had to apply my own. Not too sure bout the P4 chips themselves tho, so I guess my advice is .. might as well have some handy just in case aye ;)

cheers

211930 2004-01-31 23:09:00 The Pentium 4's boxed heatsinks come with a thermal tape already attached to the base of it. You don't need to use any thermal paste, although some people like to remove this tape and apply their own thermal paste. I just used the thermal tape for my P4 2.4 GHz CPU. Jen C (20)

Correct. Though it is not "paste", it is a thermal pad.

Is there any protective membrane or something like that at the bottom of the thermal tape or pad we have to remove before dropping in the CPU? I heard someone said that we have to remove a thin layer of protective membrane or something of that sort.

Please enlighten. Thanks

211933 2004-02-01 00:27:00 I can't remember anything about a protective membrane but the manual will give you the important details. Check Intel's website as well if you need to. ;-) Fire-and-Ice (3910)
211934 2004-02-01 01:31:00 My P4 2.4 didn't have a membrane, but if there is one on yours it will be very apparent to see. Greg S (201)

211936 2004-02-01 01:57:00 Sorry! Those links only take you to the pDF installation guides - not the comprehensive instructions that I found previously, which I can't find now.

However I did save the webpage complete, and I'll gladly email it to you if you like - it's 500KB (this is for the 478 pin unit)
