212086 2004-02-01 07:08:00 I have an external hard drive in a Manhattan enclosure and it gets quite warm. Is this normal? The drive is completely shut in with next to no airholes. Do hard drives not need any fan cooling? Could this drive get warm enough to be a fire risk? I ask because I am currently encrypting (using XP NTFS file encryption) a 24 GB "windows backup file" and it might take a while.

212087 2004-02-01 10:51:00 as with most computer stuff hot is bad......

seagate info sheet say under 55

I say under 40

I would drill a few little holes and mount a small random fan in the box.

212088 2004-02-01 10:54:00 They all get warm but you only really know its too hot when they start clicking (dead drive) - definately go with the small fan if your worried about it though- peace of mind. HadO (796)

I would spent a few dollers on a fan rather than have a dead drive later :-)

have alook at DSE for a fan, will cost about $20
