212421 2004-02-02 20:33:00 I keep getting messages from unknown recipients - mostly from Australia - saying that my message was not delivered because it contained a virus. Either I-worm My Doom or Worm SCO.A.

Obviously I did not send these messages but I have also run Norton AntiVirus every day including current updates. I have also downloaded and run TrendMicro at Xtra's suggestion. Neither program has found a virus on my computer. I cannot get through to Norton helpdesk and Xtra Security only sends back automated replies. Both are useless.

Has my email address been hijacked and are these viruses being sent from another computer? Has anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

212422 2004-02-02 20:40:00 hi ya welcome to PF1

from my understanding of this problem, it is someone else's puter infected and using the email addy's they have on it, and mailing itself to every one else it can.

so in actual fact your's may be clean but someone else's that has your addy on it, (may be work or friend) and does not always know they are infected posting emails to lots of unsuspecting people.

sometimes with disastrous consequences on other people's puter's, Prevention is better than cure.
others may explain this better but i think you get the gist of it????

212423 2004-02-02 20:48:00 The computer that has the virus is sending out messages with your email address in the From Field and as a result you receive all the returned mail.

It is very common and spammers also do this.

212425 2004-02-02 23:13:00 I'm not sure if the following information will please you or scare you, but my son's email address has now received well over 1000 virus payloads & "not deliverable" etc messages, probably close to 1500 in fact.

Our systems are virus free but his address had a previous user and it accumulates a lot of spam so it was harvested by a lot of bad guys. It has been circulated very widely indeed by this virus and I am not sure if it will ever be usable again.

Once your address is compromised it will always be vulnerable to similar attack. Even my business address has been harvested from some of my clients' computers but the incidence of incoming virus mesages on that address has dropped off over the last few days, no doubt as a result of those individuals cleaning the virus off their computers.
