212282 2004-02-02 04:41:00 I'll be building a new P4 - 2.6 or 2.8 G computer soon.

Could someone please recommend a good mainboard for my new pc. My budget is below $200/-, either ASUS or Gigabyte should be fine. No onboard video or sound, please - don't quite like the idea of having everything-in-one type of stuff. However, onboard LAN is OK.

Cheers

212283 2004-02-02 04:58:00 Doubt you will be able to find a board without onboard audio in this day and age. metla (154)
212284 2004-02-02 05:54:00 well I have a asus p4s800 which has onboard sound/network but I installed a Asus GeForce Fx5200 AGP card...........if ya dont want onboard sound just disable it in bios or device manager and then install whatever you want............

the board has some good features and I like the 800fsb and the overclockign ability tho I dont really bother with that.......I"ve gotta p4 2.4c Ghz and runnign it hyperthreaded and dual channel ram......

it's all good...............

Personally I would go more expensive but if you are stuck on a price then this may suit.

I'm a self-confessed non-expert, but I generally find that most people have their own preference based on their experience . For every person that likes Asus, there will be one that likes Gigabyte . I'd suggest eliminating the truly crap (like mine, FIC, eeeeeuggh!), and go with the best combination of features/stability/price .

AMD chips are cheaper and perform excellent.

Well, have been using Intel for many years and they are very stable . On the other hand, have encountered 'many' problems and unstabilities with AMD CPUs . Anyway, personally, will never recommend AMD cpus .
